About the NewsCartoon service

CSL NewsCartoon Service is a new concept in cartoon distribution and delivery. It operates as a live marketplace where authorised cartoonists (currently numbering over 100) can upload and catalogue news related political cartoons and editorial cartoons from anywhere in the world, at any time of day. As soon as a cartoonist has drawn a cartoon on a breaking news item, they can have it on sale to a worldwide market in minutes. Just as a news agency sells news stories or photography, the NewsCartoon Service acts as a source for the latest editorial and political cartoons and caricatures illustrating the latest news items.

The service is marketed to editors, journalist and picture researchers on news and current affairs publications and regularly updating web sites. The service is also invaluable for small publishers, in-house publications, newsletters and presentations or any other publication or web site that relates to world affairs.

Selling your cartoons through CSL NewsCartoon Service

A moderator will review cartoons on the NewsCartoon Service on a daily basis and will remove obviously objectionable, defamatory, libelous or illegal material, or material which no longer has topical relevance. However we mainly control the quality and "maturity" of content by only allowing authorised cartoonists to upload to the service. Once a cartoonist has been accepted, we will allow them to upload any cartoons they wish at any time, providing they fall within our broad guidelines.

If you wish to be allowed to sell material through CSL NewsCartoon Service, please contact us via our contact page including details of where you have been published to date, and where we can see samples of your work (preferably on the web). We will get back to you with a decision as soon as possible, but please note that we are unlikely to accept any cartoonist unless they have been published in reputable news publications and can demonstrate a sizeable body of good quality, thoughtful and mature cartoon artwork.

How does the service work ?

If you are accepted as a NewsCartoon cartoonist, you will be given a login password which will enable you to upload cartoons, edit your current cartoons and activate/de-activate or delete them.

You will be able to upload cartoons at any time, so whenever you create a topical cartoon or caricature relating to a news item, you can upload it and have it for sale to a worldwide market in minutes. Uploading is a simple task of going to our upload page, selecting the high resolution file you wish to upload in your computer (largest dimension 1800-3000 pixels, in RGB JPEG format) and clicking a button to start uploading it to our server. Once it has been uploaded, our server automatically assigns it a unique catalogue reference number and creates the low resolution and thumbnail versions that will appear on the NewsCartoon web site (your high resolution file will only be made available to clients who have licensed and paid for it). After the image has been uploaded, you are then asked to give the image a short title and categorise it, by selecting up to two existing categories or news topics to which it applies. If your cartoon relates to a news item which isn't yet listed, you can start your own new category for your cartoon. Finally, you can enter keywords which apply to your cartoon so that users can find it on a keyword search. Once you are happy with how your new cartoon is catalogued, our database is updated.

Once you have completed this process, your new cartoon is immediately available for anyone in the world who wants to use it in their publication or on their web site. As with our CartoonStock archive, users can select your cartoon, choose a license category that applies to their publication, pay for it by credit card or using an account they have already set up with us, then download the high resolution file and print it. The cartoon selection available on the NewsCartoon homepage shows the last four cartoons uploaded - so as soon as you complete the upload of a cartoon, it gets instant exposure on our homepage. We also sublicense this "freshest of the fresh" feed to other web sites, so your new cartoon will be seen by potential purchasers all over the web.

Once you have uploaded cartoons, at any time you can go to your "Cartoonists Admin" area and edit your cartoons. Firstly you can edit any element of the cataloguing, so you can change the title, categories or keywords as you wish. Secondly you can "activate" or "de-activate" any cartoon, so if you want to temporarily remove a cartoon from sale at any time, you can do so at the click of a mouse, but leave it on our server so it can be re-activated at any time. Finally if you decide you no longer wish to sell a cartoon (eg. you sell the copyright in it) you can completely delete it and the database entry from our server.

Our moderator will check the NewsCartoon database daily to standardise categories and keywords, ensure quality of images offered and remove items that are no longer of topical relevance. When you upload a cartoon, you can choose what happens when a cartoon is no longer "newsworthy". If you wish, it can be deleted entirely from our service, however it's probably going to be more lucrative to allow us to add it to our archive. If you choose this option, once we remove a cartoon from our NewsCartoon Service, it will be added to our CartoonStock archive where there is a chance it will earn you revenue for years to come. We can't make any guarantee about the level of sales, but over time, you can build up a sizeable archive of your work which may sell to publications referring to historic news items, or who feel your cartoons fit their needs for another reason.

Finally, by having cartoons in our databases (either the CartoonStock Archive or the NewsCartoon Service), you also have access to your own Personal Cartoon Archive. This is a search page which displays only your cartoons and many aspects of the page layout, colour scheme etc. can be edited by you. You can therefore link this into your own personal web site, so that you have a searchable archive of your own cartoons on your own web site - this Personal Cartoon Archive is also integrated with our e-commerce system, so your clients can buy your cartoons right from your web site, without going through CartoonStock. Your clients can license your images for a wide variety of uses and download high resolution versions instantly after paying the appropriate fee, or they can buy framed or unframed prints or mugs, mouse mats or t-shirts incorporating your images.

Getting started

If you wish to be allowed to sell material through CSL NewsCartoon Service, please contact us via our contact page including details of where you have been published to date, and where we can see samples of your work (preferably on the web). We will get back to you with a decision as soon as possible, but please note that we are unlikely to accept any cartoonist unless they have been published in reputable news publications and can demonstrate a sizeable body of good quality, thoughtful and mature cartoon artwork.

If you are not already represented by CartoonStock, we will require you to sign a brief "Cartoonists Agreement" setting out the terms on which you provide your artwork and we sell it on your behalf. We will send you a copy of this once we are satisfied that your material is suitable for the NewsCartoon Service.
