Biography - Born in Leeds, May was forced to earn his living from an early age following the death of his father. After a period of extreme poverty, often sleeping on the streets, May was finally employed as a theatrical costumier, where he also drew posters and cartoons. After a short period in Australia he returned to London, and went on to work for Punch, and drew many political portraits. He was rarely overly political, but due to his background, had a great sympathy for the poor.
