Biography - English born Hablot Knight Browne was known in the industry as Phiz, and was a respected artist. He was famous for his illustrations in the books of Charles Level, Harrison Ainsworth, and Charles Dickens as well as contributing to Punch. Beginning as an engraver, Brown worked as an apprentice, but quickly moved onto different artistic endeavours. In the mid 1830's, Browne met Charles Dickens, and they quickly became friends, with Browne illustrating several of his books. Browne was in demand until the late 1860's, when he suffered a stroke and became paralysed. He recovered enough to continue illustrating, but they were inferior compared to his previous work.
