Biography - Born in London, Alfred Waud was best known as an illustrator of Civil War and frontier south and west themes. Waud is still considered one of the most outstanding reportorial draftsmen of the 1800's. Waud left London for America, where he worked for Harper's Weekly, and was later assigned to the army where he covered the events of the Civil War. His drawings were highly regarded for their accuracy, and were even used by generals to help plan their attack strategies.
