Biography - Largely self-taught, Winslow Homer was one of the most influential illustrators of the nineteenth century. He started his career illustrating for Harper's Weekly. He was best known for his Civil War drawings, and the first oil painting he created, such as 'Prisoners from the Front', and 'The Sharp Shooter', depict scenes from the Civil War. His drawings depicting life in battle made him famous. Homer later travelled in Europe and began painting landscapes.
