Biography - Doyle was one of the most renowned illustrators of the Victorian period. The son of cartoonist John Doyle, Richard Doyle was a frequent illustrator for Punch, although his work also appeared in other publications, and he was an accomplished watercolour artist. The cover that Doyle designed for Punch in 1849 remained the cover until 1956. A devout Roman Catholic, Doyle left Punch after he became upset over the way the magazine was depicting the Pope, and concentrated on landscape painting. Doyle's nephew was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes series.
