Todd Condron<\/a>, who also joined our judging panel and has more than 1,300 cartoons available for purchase on the CartoonStock website. Todd\u2019s drawing is set in a suburban backyard, where two men are standing by the edge of a huge sinkhole and looking at a car that\u2019s fallen in. Only the back half of the car is visible. Both men are happily eating sandwiches, and one of them is addressing the other.<\/span><\/p>\nCondron\u2019s original caption\u2014<\/span>\u201cI forgot how satisfying it is to eat a sandwich over a sinkhole\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u2014was inspired by his parents\u2019 love for a series of Lawrence Sanders mystery novels that featured a detective, Edward X. Delaney, who ate sandwiches over his sink.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nA couple of you made similar jokes:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cDoesn\u2019t food always taste better when you\u2019re eating it over a car-filled sinkhole?\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cLet\u2019s never go back to eating over the kitchen sink.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
There were a lot of puns, and the best two were:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cWhy did they send us for heroes?\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cThere goes the neighbor.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\u201cHeroes,\u201d however, doesn\u2019t really work because only one of the two men is eating a submarine sandwich. Also, no one would have asked the men to get help by finding heroes. \u201cNeighbor\u201d works better, as it puts a clever twist on a common expression simply by removing the last syllable of the final word.<\/span><\/p>\nThis next caption takes a common expression and gives it a new and fitting meaning within the context of the cartoon: <\/span>\u201cYou really drove that car into the ground.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThis entry suggests the sandwich-lovers are evil\u2014<\/span>\u201cAfter lunch, let\u2019s cover it with branches and try to catch more.\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u2014while the next four suggest they\u2019re shockingly callous:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cI did hear some yelling, but that was a couple days ago.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cHang in there, Dave! This is as fast as we can chew!\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cTwo more bites and then we check for survivors.\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- \u201cBummer about the chips and drinks. And Todd.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
As someone who\u2019s never forgotten being scolded back in 1975 for getting crumbs on the backseat of my friend\u2019s father\u2019s Mercedes\u2014God, did I hate that car\u2014I liked this caption: <\/span>\u201cBe careful\u2014you\u2019re getting crumbs all over my car.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThese next two captions refer to the car\u2019s position in the sinkhole:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cGood thing we packed the sandwiches in the trunk.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cWho taught this guy how to vertical park?\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
There were several jokes suggesting that the driver was still in the car, and that the men on the edge of the sinkhole were offering him useless advice:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cHe\u2019s trying, but the front tires keep spinning in the mud.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cHave you tried putting it in reverse?\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cTry reverse!\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The next caption alludes to the misconception that someone who digs a hole from some spot in the Unites States to the other end of the Earth would end up in China: <\/span>\u201cTony\u2019s really craving Chinese.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThese entries suggest that the beverages are still in the car, and that the men on the edge of the sinkhole are overly concerned about them:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cI wonder what\u2019s left of my Big Gulp.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI hope he didn\u2019t spill our drinks.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The next two entries are funny, but they\u2019re not specific enough to the scenario:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cLooks like a you problem.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI\u2019m sure it will buff out.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
This caption is mildly funny in a dark way, and it works, but it\u2019s too much like the old \u201cTake my wife, please\u201d jokes that haven\u2019t aged particularly well: <\/span>\u201cThe important thing is, other than our wives, no one was hurt.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThis caption seems funny at first, but it doesn\u2019t really make sense because it suggests cars have been racing through the neighbors\u2019 backyards on a regular basis: <\/span>\u201cThis works much better than speed bumps.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThis next caption came out of left field, but it addresses every aspect of the cartoon while explaining how the car ended up in the sinkhole, and it made me laugh out loud: <\/span>\u201cI sold the hazard signs and bought lunch.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nSome of my fellow judges liked this next caption, which turns on the double meaning of the last word: <\/span>\u201cYou\u2019re leaking oil.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nHere\u2019s a decent example of the oblivious speaker entry: <\/span>\u201cLook\u2014some moron\u2019s composting a Buick.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nAnd finally, here\u2019s a caption that has the man who\u2019s speaking looking on the bright side: <\/span>\u201cWell, it could have been worse. We could have left our lunch in the car.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nCongratulations to GRANT MIEKLE, who submitted the winning caption: <\/span>\u201cTwo more bites and then we check for survivors.\u201d<\/i><\/b> Meikle is a cartoonist who goes by the alias \u201cScribbly G,\u201d and he submitted the drawing for last month\u2019s caption contest.<\/span><\/p>\nThe five runners-up are:<\/span><\/p>\n\n- \u201cI did hear some yelling, but that was a couple days ago.”<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
