BIG NEWS: Bob Mankoff is now a grandfather! Last Thursday his daughter gave birth to what Bob described as an \u201ceight-pound eight-ounce bundle of boy\u201d named <\/span>Whittier David Dunn<\/b>, whom everyone is calling Whit. Congratulations to Bob and his entire expanding family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Now on to our contest, which featured a captionless drawing by <\/span>New Yorker<\/span><\/i> cartoonist <\/span>Felipe Galindo<\/b> (aka Feggo), who helped judge the nearly 500 entries. If you read my book on the caption contest, you already know that Feggo is one of four <\/span>New Yorker<\/span><\/i> cartoonists with whom I have collaborated. Our most recent collaboration, from the February 4, 2024 issue of <\/span>The New Yorker<\/span><\/i>, is not in my book but does appear below. You can buy a print from CartoonStock:<\/span><\/p>\n Feggo\u2019s drawing for the CartoonStock contest is set in a church, where Rene Magritte\u2019s <\/span>Son of Man<\/span><\/i>, his face obscured by a large green apple, is marrying Carmen Miranda, who has a basket of fruit on her head. A priest is officiating and speaking.<\/span><\/p>\n Feggo\u2019s original caption was <\/span>\u201cTill juicing do you part,\u201d<\/span><\/i> and one of you submitted something similar: <\/span>\u201cTill expiration date do you part.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n This pun is clever\u2014<\/span>\u201cAnd to think it all started as a one-night fruit stand\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u2014<\/span><\/i>but it doesn\u2019t really work because there\u2019s no such thing as a<\/span> one-night fruit stand.<\/span><\/p>\n I like this pun much better: <\/span>\u201cI didn\u2019t realize this was an edible arrangement.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n But I hate this pun: <\/span>\u201cCantaloupe?\u201d<\/i><\/b> It would be clearer, but still awful, if it were \u201cCan\u2019t elope?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Here\u2019s a clever allusion to Genesis 1:28: <\/span>\u201cAnd multiply.\u201d<\/i><\/b> A second biblical reference puts a nice twist on Mark 19:6: <\/span>\u201cWhat God has joined together, let no man put in a blender.\u201d<\/i><\/b> And here\u2019s another joke about the same kitchen appliance: <\/span>\u201cOh dear. I\u2019m told every wedding gift is a blender.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n I like these two allusions to the title of the Magritte painting that Feggo used for his cartoon:<\/span><\/p>\n That second caption is almost too perfect, and I initially assumed that it must have been Feggo\u2019s original caption. I was wrong, and the fact that it seems obvious only confirms that it\u2019s a terrific entry.<\/span><\/p>\n While <\/span>The Son of Man<\/span><\/i> is certainly one of Magritte\u2019s most famous paintings, this next caption alludes to what may be his most widely-recognized work, <\/span>Ceci n\u2019est pas une pipe<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>This is not a pipe<\/span><\/i>): <\/span>\u201cCeci n\u2019est pas une marriage.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n The next three captions all begin with the first three words of a standard question at marriage ceremonies:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n Those first two captions did well in crowdsourcing, but I like the last entry best (even though \u201cwhoever\u201d should be \u201cwho<\/span>m<\/span>ever\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n Like that last entry, the next four captions note that the groom\u2019s face is completely hidden by the apple:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n Here are four clever variations on what a priest says to conclude a marriage ceremony:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n The first two of those entries refer to the labels that contain PLU (Price Look Up) codes, while this caption refers to a different kind of label: <\/span>\u201cInstead of rings the couple will be exchanging \u2018Best if used by\u2026\u2019 stickers.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n I love fruit, but these next two captions suggest that many people hate it:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n Feggo enjoyed the following entry because he\u2019s actually been stopped by airport security while trying to board a plane with fruit in his suitcase: <\/span>\u201cGood luck on the honeymoon\u2014and getting through customs.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n This caption highlights Magritte\u2019s position as an influential figure in the Surrealist movement: <\/span>\u201cMarriage is like a work of art that makes no sense whatsoever.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n This next caption surprised and delighted all of us, in part because it focused on the exact number of fruits in Carmen Miranda\u2019s basket: <\/span>\u201cA bold choice, I must say, to approach the altar in a hat depicting all five of your exes.\u201d<\/i><\/b> While this entry noted that none of the fruits in her basket was an apple: <\/span>\u201cYou complete her.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n This entry does not address Magritte\u2019s <\/span>Son of Man<\/span><\/i>, but the image it created made me laugh: <\/span>\u201cLet us bow our heads\u2014Christ, there goes the pineapple.\u201d<\/i><\/b> I also love the somewhat sacrilegious thought of a priest using the Lord\u2019s name as an interjection.<\/span><\/p>\n Finally, we have a caption that acknowledges <\/span>The Son of Man<\/span><\/i> is a great work of art: <\/span>\u201cImmediately following this ceremony, please join the happy couple for a reception at MOMA.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n Congratulations to KAREN KONNO, who submitted the winning caption: <\/span>\u201cMarriage is like a work of art that makes no sense whatsoever.\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The five runners-up are:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n HOLLY PORTER<\/span><\/p>\n JOHN KONNO (who I assume is married to this week\u2019s winner)<\/span>\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n KATHY WROBEL<\/span><\/p>\n KARI WOODWARD<\/span><\/p>\n BRANDON LAWNICZAK<\/span><\/p>\n If you want to see how we made our selections, we recorded the process and posted it below and on our YouTube channel.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/CC905122_Sharing-224x300.jpg\")
