You can, and you license them the same way a publisher does. At CartoonStock, a self-published title gets exactly the same license as a book from a large publishing house. The only difference is that you make every decision yourself, so this guide takes them in the order you&#8217;ll meet them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Cartoons in a Self-Published Book Still Need a License<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every cartoon in our catalog belongs to the cartoonist who drew it, or to their estate. Putting it in your book is a use of their work, and the license is how they get paid for that use. Self-publishing doesn&#8217;t change this. Neither does a short print run, or a book you plan to give away.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cartoon found online with no watermark or credit can look free to use. It almost never is. Our print run bands start at 1\u20135,000 copies, so a modest self-published run pays a modest fee.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Counting Copies When You Print on Demand<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Publication licenses are priced by print run, in five bands:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>1\u20135,000<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>5,001\u201350,000<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>50,001\u2013100,000<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>100,001\u20131,000,000<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>1,000,001 and above<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A traditional publisher knows its print run before the presses start. Print-on-demand has no print run at all, because each copy is printed when someone orders it. So count the copies you expect to sell over the whole life of the book. Our licenses don&#8217;t expire, so the figure that matters is lifetime sales.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your realistic estimate is under 5,000 copies, choose the 1\u20135,000 band with confidence. If sales overtake your estimate, you move up a band and pay only the difference. Our post on <em>which license size to choose when you don&#8217;t know your print run<\/em> (coming soon) covers the in-between cases.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Ebook Is Included, but Count the Downloads<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Publishing an ebook alongside the paperback? You don&#8217;t need a second license. Your print license already covers the ebook, provided the cartoon appears in the same content and the same context.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do need to add your expected downloads to your paperback sales when you pick a band. Three thousand paperbacks plus 2,500 ebook downloads comes to 5,500 copies, which puts you in the second band.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting with an ebook only and might print later? Say so when you contact us. A license bought for an ebook alone doesn&#8217;t stretch to print, but we&#8217;ll arrange the print license at minimal cost.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose Worldwide If You Sell Online<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Licenses come in two territories: worldwide, or everywhere outside the US and Canada. For self-published authors, the answer is nearly always worldwide.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your book is listed on any online store that readers in the US or Canada can buy from, you&#8217;re selling there, whether you planned to or not. Outside the US and Canada only fits a book you sell yourself, in person or through local shops, with no online listing. <em>Territory rights for publishing<\/em> (coming soon) explains the two options in more depth.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the License Lets You Do on the Page<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A standard license covers cartoons in a self-published book when they sit inside the book at less than half a page. The cover isn&#8217;t included. If you want a cartoon on the front, we do license covers, but as a custom license with its own quote. You can change the caption font to suit your layout. Cropping, recoloring or adding your own words needs our written agreement first, so ask before you license if your design depends on a change.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every cartoon also needs the credit www.CartoonStock.com close by. Save it with the high-resolution file. If a publisher picks up your book later, this is the first thing they&#8217;ll ask for, and <em>filling in your publisher&#8217;s permissions log<\/em> (coming soon) shows where each detail goes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bottom Line<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cartoons in a self-published book each need a license, and that license works exactly as it does for a publisher. Count lifetime copies across print and ebook, choose worldwide if the book sells online, and keep the cartoon inside the page.
