Tell them the idea you need, share the license terms early, and they&#8217;ll come back with cartoons you can use straight away. And if you don&#8217;t have a researcher, we&#8217;re happy to do the searching for you.<\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<h2>Brief the Idea, Not the Picture<\/h2>\r\n<p>A good cartoon brief describes a point, not a picture. &#8220;A cartoon about procrastination for the time management chapter&#8221; gives a researcher something to work with. &#8220;A cartoon of a man at a desk&#8221; will get you plenty of men at plenty of desks, and no guarantee any of them are putting things off.<\/p>\r\n<p>It also helps to share what the cartoon will be doing on the page:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Which idea it illustrates<\/li>\r\n<li>Whether it opens a chapter or sits inside the text<\/li>\r\n<li>What tone the surrounding text takes<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>If students will analyze the cartoon as well as enjoy it, mention that too. The best cartoons for analysis make their point on their own, and a researcher who knows that will look for them.<\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<h2>Share the License Terms Early<\/h2>\r\n<p>Scope is what turns a long list into a useful one. Once a researcher knows where the book is going, they can shortlist cartoons that fit it from the start. The details worth including are:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The print run band, including ebook downloads<\/li>\r\n<li>The territory: worldwide, or outside the US and Canada<\/li>\r\n<li>The formats: print, ebook, electronic-only or courseware<\/li>\r\n<li>Whether translated editions are planned<\/li>\r\n<li>Whether any cartoon is for the cover<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>If the territory is still being decided, <em>territory rights for publishing (coming soon)<\/em> can help. A licensed cartoon runs as the cartoonist drew it, which is a big part of why it works. The caption font can change to suit your layout. If you have something else in mind, such as a crop or a change of color, it just needs our written agreement first, and we&#8217;re happy to talk it through.<\/p>\r\n<p>On size, a standard license covers the cartoon inside the book at less than half a page. Cover use is a custom license, so mention any cover plans in the brief and we&#8217;ll quote for it.<\/p>\r\n<p>With both points in the brief, the shortlist comes back ready to drop straight into the layout.<\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<h2>No Researcher? We&#8217;ll Do the Looking<\/h2>\r\n<p>If you&#8217;d rather not brief anyone, brief us.
