The judge is on the bench and looking at two men at the defense table. They appear to be identical, and they\u2019re wearing the same plaid suits. One of them is standing, speaking to the judge, and therefore delivering the line that must address both the courtroom setting and the fact that the speaker is representing (or co-counseling a case with) his exact double.<\/p>\n<p>My first few captions referenced pro-se litigants, who actually do represent themselves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cI\u2019m representing myself.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI\u2019m appearing on my own behalf.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cMy client is self-represented.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Representing one\u2019s self in court is never a good idea. In the words of Abraham Lincoln, \u201cHe who represents himself has a fool for a client,\u201d a quote that inspired my next two captions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cI do not, Your Honor, care for the adage about lawyers who represent themselves.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI have a fool for a client.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because the lawyer who\u2019s speaking appears to be representing or working with his doppelganger, I focused on captions that play on the word \u201cdouble\u201d while addressing legal principles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cMy double\u2019s in jeopardy.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cMy double handles indemnity.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My last caption targets lawyers who are still surprised to find women on the bench: <b>\u201cYou know what\u2019s even more peculiar? A lady judge.\u201d<\/b> Very few such lawyers still exist, but in my twenty-eight years as an attorney I\u2019ve litigated against a couple, and they look like the guy in this drawing.<\/p>\n<p>Now, on to your captions&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartooncollections.com\/search?categories=Business\/Commerce&amp;utm_medium=BLOG&amp;utm_source=LW&amp;utm_campaign=PRES&amp;utm_content=P1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1957\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/pres_img.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/pres_img.jpg 1237w, https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/pres_img-300x279.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/pres_img-768x715.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/pres_img-1024x954.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many included the words \u201cyour honor.\u201d Both words, however, should be capitalized because \u201cYour Honor\u201d is a formal title used as a direct address. That may seem unimportant, but this contest was created and is being judged by the guy who used to be an editor at <i>The New Yorker<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there were a lot of outstanding entries this week, and most came at the drawing from angles I never considered. Let\u2019s first, however, look at the captions that were similar to mine. Many went after the pro-se joke, and the best two were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cYour Honor, I\u2019ve chosen to represent myself.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYour Honor, I\u2019d like to represent myself.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several of you referenced Lincoln\u2019s opinion of self-represented litigants, and the best was, <b>\u201cIt appears that I have a fool for a client.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>One of you put a nice twist on the phrase lawyers traditionally open with when presenting an oral argument: <b>\u201cMay it amuse the court.\u201d<\/b> (I don\u2019t want this blog to read like an application for a copy-editing position, but the word \u201ccourt\u201d should be capitalized because it refers to the judge presiding over the case.)<\/p>\n<p>Several of you made a \u201cbeside myself\u201d joke, and the best was the shortest: <b>\u201cYour Honor, I\u2019m beside myself.\u201d<\/b> Other captions highlighting the identical appearance of the two men at the defense table included, <b>\u201cI believe I can speak for both of us.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Another strong entry\u2014<b>\u201cAs the court can see, this suit is not without precedent\u201d<\/b>\u2014would be better without the first five words, which nearly double the caption\u2019s length for no purpose. That\u2019s why I prefer this version of the same joke: <b>\u201cThis suit is not without precedent.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Many of you referenced a \u201cmistaken identity\u201d defense:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cThe witnesses\u2019 description of my client\u2019s appearance could apply to anyone, Your Honour.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYour honor, the defense will show that this case comes down to a simple case of mistaken identity.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cNot guilty your honor. It\u2019s an obvious case of mistaken identity.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cWhat we have here, your honor, is a simple case of mistaken identity.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYour honor, my client will argue this is a case of mistaken identity.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I like the first caption a lot, which I assume came from a British entrant given the spelling of \u201cHonour.\u201d Not only is \u201cYour Honour\u201d properly capitalized, but I love the implication that there could be many people who look exactly like the lawyer and his client. Nevertheless, this caption does not end with the punchline the way the other captions do. \u201cMistaken identity\u201d is a stronger ending than \u201cYour Honour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are several fine entries that reference the charges against the defendant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cMy client pleads not guilty to impersonating an attorney.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYour Honor, does my client look like a plagiarist?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cCopycat? Yes. Killer? No.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cIt was a crime of fashion, your honor.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That last caption\u2014an all too rare example of a good pun\u2014has one fatal flaw: it ignores the fact that the two men at the defense table look exactly the same.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not a problem with any of the following nine captions, all of which I really like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cWe\u2019ll be representing Xerox in this case, Your Honor.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cThe statute of imitations applies here, your honor.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe\u2019s messing with you. I\u2019m the defendant.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThis case combines two criminal suits.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cWe also have matching briefs.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYour honor, we both are here regarding the same suit.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYour honor, at the risk of appearing duplicitous\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cObjection, Your honor! I\u2019m not the one on trial here.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cAs you can see, your honor, my client is easily influenced.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Choosing a winner out of such a strong and large pool is not easy, but I\u2019m going with, <b>\u201cCopycat? Yes. Killer?
