\"CartoonIn the background of Charlie Hankin\u2019s oil field are four machines extracting crude oil from the ground. Next to several large holes in the ground are treasure chests, presumably filled with gold.\u00a0 Kneeling beside one of these treasure chests is a roughneck who\u2019s saying something to his fellow roughneck.<\/p>\n

I suspect that Hankin drew this cartoon in response to President Trump\u2019s recent assertion that America\u2019s \u201ctremendous wealth\u2026is under its feet.\u201d Trump was referring to oil, and justifying his short-sighted decision to continue relying on this resource despite pressing concerns about climate change, so my first several captions address his comment:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u201cMy God, the wealth really is under our feet.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. \u201cIs this the \u2018tremendous wealth\u2019 the President was referring to?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I next alluded to the fact that digging for gold is better for the environment than drilling for oil: \u201cAnd we can extract this wealth without harming the environment.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

    My next two captions allude to the fact that oil is known as black gold:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. \u201cWho cares about black<\/em> gold?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. \u201cI prefer gold gold.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Economists measure gold\u2019s value in terms of oil (i.e., an ounce of gold is worth however many barrels of oil), and my next caption addresses that calculation: \u201cCome on. One ounce of this is worth fifteen barrels<\/em> of that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

      My final caption acknowledges that both gold and oil are valuable commodities: \u201cWe\u2019re here to extract a valuable resource form the ground. It doesn\u2019t have to be oil.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Now let\u2019s see how you did.<\/p>\n

      There were many references to black gold, and the best included:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. \u201cI haven\u2019t found any black gold.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
      2. \u201cNone of this gold is black.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
      3. \u201cWho needs black gold when you\u2019ve got gold gold?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Some of you connected the treasure chests to pirates:<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. \u201cExxon marks the spot.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
        2. \u201cIt\u2019s from the Pirates of Pennzoil.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          I can\u2019t decide whether I love or hate #2.<\/p>\n

          While I assumed the treasure chests contained gold, one of you posited that they contained something else: \u201cThey\u2019re full of solar panels.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

          I noted above that Trump recently said America\u2019s wealth is under its feet, but I neglected to mention that he also promised not to squander this wealth on \u201cwindmills, which frankly aren\u2019t working too well.\u201d One of you alluded to that promise: \u201cI\u2019d like to see a windmill do this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

          As I did, a couple of you noted that digging for gold is an environmentally-friendly pursuit:<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. \u201cThe environmental impact is tiny.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
          2. \u201cAt least it\u2019s carbon neutral.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            A couple more of you submitted captions highlighting the obliviousness of the roughneck struggling to open the chest:<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. \u201cDang, the lock is rusted. Do we have anything that could loosen it up?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
            2. \u201cThe latch won\u2019t work. You got any oil?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              I like the idea behind those two captions better than the execution. The first is too long, while the second loses something by explicitly identifying (instead of just implying) that oil is the lubricant the roughneck needs to loosen the latch. Taking the best of both captions and putting them together could lead to a stronger caption like, \u201cThe latch won\u2019t work. Got any lubricant?\u201d<\/p>\n

              Here are two captions that cleverly play on the term \u201crich soil:\u201d<\/p>\n

                \n
              1. \u201cThis soil is richer than we thought.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
              2. \u201cWho knew this soil was so rich?\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                And, as always, there were several good captions that didn\u2019t fit neatly into any category:<\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. \u201cFinally, we can pay for another oil well.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
                2. \u201dWe struck gold.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
                3. \u201cShareholders voted to put money back into the oil fields.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
                4. \u201cWe\u2019re diversifying.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
                5. \u201cI don\u2019t know, Bob. Boss said not to come back until we strike oil.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
                6. \u201cMaybe we should switch to gold mining.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  This week\u2019s best entry is, \u201cThey\u2019re full of solar panels.\u201d<\/strong> It\u2019s funny, but it also manages to comment\u2014in just five short words\u2014on Big Oil\u2019s efforts to downplay or even bury evidence of the value of alternative energy sources. That\u2019s quite an achievement for a cartoon caption.<\/p>\n
