Same date as today eighteen years ago. <em>The New Yorker<\/em> was then located uptown on 42<sup>nd<\/sup> Street. I was driving in from Westchester when the planes hit but never made it because all entrances to Manhattan were sealed off. I went home and watched the towers fall and felt sick and remembered that my mom, Mollie was really, really sick. She lived in Queens at that time and was sick unto death which would soon come, but she was still at home and quite out of it on pain killers. She didn\u2019t have long to go and I didn\u2019t have anywhere to go so I went to see her. She was watching the endless replay on TV of the planes hitting, the towers falling, the planes hitting the towers falling when I got to see her. I said, \u201cMom this is terrible\u201d. She said \u201cYes, terrible, but thank God no one got hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed and never told her. She didn\u2019t need any more pain.<\/p>\n<p>Now, maybe I shouldn\u2019t have laughed but I don\u2019t regret it. Laughter after all is a kind of breathing and breath is life. At <em>The New Yorker<\/em> we had the wind knocked out of us so we decide there would be no cartoons in the next issue, except this drawing by George Booth which even though it has the form of a cartoon is really a lamentation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2981\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/9-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/9-11.jpg 351w, https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/9-11-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But the week after we did start running cartoons. This was the first one by Leo Cullum:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartooncollections.com\/cartoon?searchID=CC46350\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2980\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/CC46350_hi.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/CC46350_hi.png 800w, https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/CC46350_hi-300x249.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/CC46350_hi-768x636.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It made the simple point that where there\u2019s life there\u2019s laughter.
