\"CaptionP.C. Vey\u2019s cartoon is set in a police station, where a fisherman is looking at a line-up of five fish who are wearing numbers for identification. A plainclothes detective is looking at the fish and speaking, though it\u2019s not clear whether she\u2019s addressing the fish, the fisherman, or the armed and uniformed officer standing behind her.<\/p>\n

Sometimes a distinctive physical feature helps the witness tie a suspect to the crime, so I thought the detective might want to see if any of the suspects had a hole in its mouth from a fish hook: \u201cNumber 5, show us the left side of your mouth.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because detectives often ask suspects to repeat something the perpetrator said or did at the crime scene, I came up with this caption: \u201cNumber 5, flop around like you\u2019ve been hauled out of the water and thrown on a riverbank.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

After the witness has identified the perpetrator, detectives (at least the ones on TV shows) sometimes revel in the fact that the perpetrator will pay for the crime with his life: \u201cNumber 5, you\u2019re gonna fry. But first you\u2019re gonna get breaded.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

People refer to fish they almost caught as the ones that got away, so I had the detective saying to the witness, \u201cDon\u2019t worry. He\u2019s not getting away this time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

People also exaggerate the size of such fish, so I thought the detective might say, \u201cThey\u2019re small, but otherwise they match the description you gave.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because fishermen are prone to exaggerate the size of the ones that got away, stories that aren\u2019t entirely true are called \u201cfish stories.\u201d Therefore, my final caption was, \u201cI intended no disrespect when I called your statement a fish story.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
