\"\"Teresa Burns Parkhurst\u2019s drawing is challenging. It appears to take place at an art exhibit where a small crowd is watching a woman who\u2019s on a bucking car seat that\u2019s spinning around wildly. The woman\u2019s lost one shoe and her hands are in the air. There\u2019s a seat belt, but it\u2019s unbuckled. It\u2019s not clear who\u2019s talking, but I assume it\u2019s the spectator who has her hand raised as if she\u2019s asking a question. (Ed. note: This didn’t appear to be an art exhibit to us, but patrons in a bar around what looks like a version of a mechanical bull. Not that it makes it easier.)<\/p>\n

I give up. I cannot think of one caption for this cartoon, and I would love to know what Burns\u2019 original idea was. Or maybe this is the rare example of a drawing that was originally submitted without a caption.<\/p>\n

In any event, let\u2019s see how you did.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the best political joke: \u201cIt\u2019s concept art entitled, Administration.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

And here\u2019s the best Jewish joke: \u201cWE HAVE A MINYAN!!!!!!!!\u201d<\/strong> That entry, which is especially clever because there are exactly ten people in the drawing, would be a lot better without the \u201call caps\u201d and exclamation points.<\/p>\n

I like the way this next caption sounds like a comment one might actually hear at a museum: \u201cAnd here is a fine example of the artist\u2019s Mechanical Period.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a website devoted to captions that simply explain what is happening in the drawing without commenting on the scene, and this entry fits neatly into that category: \u201cYour shoe fell off.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This next entry is a fine example of a caption that highlights the obliviousness of the character who\u2019s speaking: \u201cI have a question about the seat color.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

And this caption not only makes sense, but captures the feeling many of us may have experienced while trying to come up with a caption: \u201cI have a question?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s always room in the contest for scatological humor: \u201cI\u2019ll do it if the fabric\u2019s stain resistant.\u201d<\/strong> And for those who like to work blue: \u201cGood thing you weren\u2019t wearing a skirt.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This, however, is the entry that actually made me laugh, and is therefore my choice for the best entry of the week: \u201cRaise your hand if you heard her say, \u2018stop.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have never highlighted so few entries\u2014just nine\u2014but that\u2019s nine more than I could come up with. Congratulations to all of you who met the challenge of captioning what I think may be the most difficult drawing ever used for this or The New Yorker\u2019s caption contest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
