Is someone we can\u2019t see commenting on the bird that\u2019s flown through the window? Should the caption reflect the bird\u2019s thoughts? Or should the caption be the cartoon\u2019s title, in the same way that \u201cFrankie Goes to Hollywood\u201d could have served as the title of Bob Eckstein\u2019s drawing from last week\u2019s contest? I\u2019ll explore all three possibilities.<\/p>\n

Assuming someone outside the frame is speaking<\/u>:<\/p>\n

I first made a reference to a video game (\u201cThat is one angry bird\u201d<\/strong>), and then to the current protests against police brutality: \u00a0\u201cEven the birds are rising up.\u201d<\/strong> Finally, I blamed the homeowners for the damage: \u201cWe wouldn\u2019t have to replace it if you hadn\u2019t made me clean it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Assuming the caption reflects the bird\u2019s thoughts<\/u>:<\/p>\n

I first noted that birds sometimes fly into windows that reflect an image of trees: \u00a0\u201cWhere the hell did all the trees go?\u201d <\/strong>I next imagined the bird exacting revenge against the cause of so many avian fatalities: \u201cTake that, you murderous son of a bitch.\u201d <\/strong>I then had the bird cursing the cleaning agent that made the window appear invisible: \u201cGoddamn Windex.\u201d <\/strong>Then I made another reference to the protests: \u201cFuck the police.\u201d <\/strong>The bird in the drawing could be a starling, and because a flock of starlings is called a scourge, I came up with this caption: \u201cI\u2019m a lone scourge.\u201d <\/strong>Finally, I had the bird brag about his insanely reckless behavior: \u201cAnd they think loons are crazy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
