\"\"Teresa Burns Parkhurst\u2019s drawing is set in a restaurant, where a squirrel and a dog are sitting at a table, sharing a pizza and a bottle of wine. The squirrel, wine glass in its right hand, is speaking.<\/p>\n

Assuming the squirrel\u2019s on a first date with the dog, I came up with these four captions:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u201cSo, what do you do when you\u2019re not barking your head off?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. \u201cI hope you\u2019re not one of those guys who just enjoys the chase.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. \u201cI\u2019m not usually attracted to good boys.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
  4. \u201cI like bad boys, so when your owner scolded you I knew you were my type.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Now let\u2019s see how you did.<\/p>\n

    Many entries focused on the fact that dogs chase squirrels:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. \u201cNo\u2026it was you who pursued me!\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. \u201cMarriage is nice, but I miss the chase.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n
    3. \u201cYou\u2019re right, the thrill was in the chase.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    4. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t until you stopped chasing me that I realized I wanted to be with you.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    5. \u201cSo glad I stopped playing hard to get.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    6. \u201cIf I knew this was what you had in mind, I would have let you catch me sooner.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    7. \u201cSomething tells me that I\u2019m the first one you\u2019ve actually caught.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    8. \u201cChase down a waiter for me.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      These entries highlight the traditionally antagonistic relationship between dogs and squirrels:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. \u201cWe can\u2019t be seen like this in public.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
      2. \u201cI can\u2019t even remember what we were fighting about.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        I like the way this caption suggests an unexpected reason the relationship between the dog and squirrel might be doomed: \u201cThis can never work. I\u2019m gay.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Several of you noted that dogs are notoriously easy to distract, especially when they see a squirrel:<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. \u201cRemember when the sight of me was enough to distract you?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
        2. \u201cYes, sorry, go ahead and eat\u2014I don\u2019t mean to distract you.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
        3. \u201cYou seem distracted.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
        4. \u201cYou had me at squirrel<\/em>!\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          As there have been for the past three months, there were a lot of covid-19 jokes. These five focus on the pandemic\u2019s effect on restaurants:<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of cool how we\u2019re saving the restaurant industry.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
          2. \u201cPrior to COVID, we couldn\u2019t even get a table.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
          3. \u201cAt some point, they\u2019re coming back. And when they do, I\u2019m not giving up my seat.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
          4. \u201cWhen do you think the humans are coming back?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
          5. \u201cI hope they never reopen.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            The squirrel appears to be raising his wine glass to deliver a toast, and several of you imagined what he might be saying:<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. \u201cHere\u2019s to COVID-19!\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n
            2. \u201cHere\u2019s to a second spike!\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
            3. \u201cTo Rocky, who you just couldn\u2019t resist chasing into traffic on the way here.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
            4. \u201cCould you please wait until I finish the toast?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              I love the way this next entry fits the drawing so well because it acknowledges that the dog looks like he\u2019s in pain: \u201cI told you the cheese was hot.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

              Here\u2019s the best sick joke: \u201cThat looks like my Uncle Fred\u2014after the semi flattened him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

              And here\u2019s the best sex joke: \u201cIs the collar because you\u2019re domesticated or kinky?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

              In some entries the squirrel\u2019s pretentious:<\/p>\n

                \n
              1. \u201cThe wine has hints of nuts and buried bones.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
              2. \u201cYou call this a Capricciosa?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                In others he\u2019s an enthusiast:<\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. \u201cYou know what would be good on this? Peanut butter.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
                2. \u201cThis pizza is garbage. 5 stars!\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  And in still others he\u2019s about to lodge a complaint:<\/p>\n

                    \n
                  1. \u201cI asked for cutlery.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
                  2. \u201cThere\u2019s a hair in my food.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                    These entries acknowledge that the sight of two animals dining together at a restaurant would draw unwanted attention from the other patrons:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

                      \n
                    1. \u201cI swear that other table\u2019s staring at us again.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
                    2. \u201cPay no attention, they\u2019re only staring at us because we\u2019re not wearing masks.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                      In this caption, the date\u2019s going badly: \u201cNope. Again, you\u2019re thinking of a chipmunk.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                      And here, the squirrel has devised a way to use the dog\u2019s natural talents to skip out on the check: \u201cHey, if you play dead we may get the meal for free.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                      Once again, congratulations on coming up with so many strong entries. The best is, \u201cI can\u2019t even remember what we were fighting about.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                      ENTER THIS WEEK’S CAPTION CONTEST<\/a><\/p>\n

                      Lawrence Wood has won The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting seven times and been a finalist two other times. He has collaborated with New Yorker cartoonists Peter Kuper, Lila Ash, Felipe Galindo Gomez, and Harry Bliss (until Bliss tossed him aside, as anyone would, to collaborate with Steve Martin).
