I first thought that the man was ignoring his only household responsibility: \u201cHe has one chore. One.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I then thought about Dan Savage, the sometimes brutally direct advice columnist who often receives letters from people complaining about their partners. When the problem cannot be addressed through counseling, Dan\u2019s advice is always DTMFA (Dump The Mother-Fucker Already; his words, not mine). That advice inspired my first caption: \u201cWe\u2019re past therapy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even Dan Savage, however, acknowledges that it\u2019s hard to leave someone with whom you have an especially strong physical connection, and that led to my next caption: \u201cHe\u2019s really<\/em> good in bed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I then thought of a couple of pandemic-related jokes:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u201cI have no problem maintaining a distance of at least six feet.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. \u201cThe sanitation department lets him work from home.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The virus has forced many people to cancel vacation plans, so I imagined that the man might be trying to attract seagulls in a misguided attempt to replicate the feeling of being near the ocean: \u201cHe says if you close your eyes it\u2019s like being at the shore.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Now let\u2019s see how you did:<\/p>\n

    I feared that Allenby\u2019s drawing would elicit a lot of references to Jonathan Livingston Seagull<\/em>, and I was right, but I was pleasantly surprised by one unexpectedly clever pun: \u201cThese are Jonathan\u2019s living room seagulls.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

    I also like these two puns, which have nothing to do with JLS:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. \u201cHe\u2019s a trash collector.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. \u201cHe\u2019s a keeper, they said.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      That second caption would be so much stronger without the last two words. They\u2019re unnecessary, and the caption should end with the punchline, which is \u201ckeeper.\u201d<\/p>\n

      Most of this week\u2019s pandemic-related entries were about social distancing:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. \u201cHis new method of social distancing.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
      2. \u201cSocial distancing is the one thing he\u2019s good at.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
      3. \u201cIt\u2019s his idea of social distancing.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n
      4. \u201cThat\u2019s one way to social distance.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        The others were about working remotely:<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. \u201cThe Sanitation Department has him bringing his work home.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
        2. \u201cEven garbage men were told they had to work from home.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n
        3. \u201cStreets and Sanitation workers should not be allowed to work from home.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
        4. \u201cYeah, the Sanitation Department is having them all work from home.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          That fourth caption would be the best of the \u201cworking remotely\u201d entries if it were just a little tighter. Every word counts in a caption, and the words \u201cyeah\u201d and \u201call\u201d just get in the way and do nothing but make the caption longer.<\/p>\n

          A couple of similar entries allude not to working from home but to bringing work home:<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. \u201cI hate it when he brings his work home with him.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
          2. \u201cMost sanitation workers don\u2019t bring their work home.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            This caption\u2014\u201cHe\u2019s great in bed!\u201d<\/strong>\u2014is almost identical to one of mine, but I wish it didn\u2019t include an exclamation point. The woman who\u2019s speaking isn\u2019t excited, so the punctuation doesn\u2019t match her expression. She\u2019s explaining why she\u2019s staying with her trash-collecting partner, but she doesn\u2019t look proud or defiant. She looks resigned, so the caption should end with a less emphatic period.<\/p>\n

            This next entry offers another and far less believable explanation for the woman\u2019s decision to stay with such a difficult partner: \u201cBut he writes the best captions.\u201d<\/strong> I\u2019m usually not much for meta-humor, but I do like that caption. And as someone who\u2019s lost more than 700 New Yorker caption contests (and who\u2019s named Larry), I can also relate to this entry: \u201cI just can\u2019t get Larry to part with any of his losing captions.\u201d<\/strong> Here\u2019s another entry I like that assumes the man in the drawing and I share the same first name: \u201cThanks for putting pants on today, Larry.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Here\u2019s the week\u2019s best sex joke: \u00a0\u201cSo, Amy, are you still down for that threesome?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            And here is an entry I could never choose as this week\u2019s winner even though it made me laugh out loud: \u201cTake a last look at your son, Mildred, before I castrate him and feed his balls to the seagulls.\u201d<\/strong> Vulgar? Yes. Disturbing? Sure. But it fits the drawing and all three characters\u2019 expressions perfectly, and though it\u2019s unusually long I wouldn\u2019t change a word. Each one serves a purpose.<\/p>\n

            This common expression works perfectly well in the context of the drawing\u2014\u201cOne man\u2019s trash is another man\u2019s treasure\u201d<\/strong>\u2014but I prefer this subtler variation on the same joke: \u201cRemember, it\u2019s another man\u2019s treasure.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Here\u2019s a variation on another common saying, one that\u2019s used in computer science to express the idea that flawed data produces useless results: \u201cWe\u2019re good on garbage in. Garbage out is a struggle.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            And here\u2019s a clever twist on an English proverb: \u201cBut you can\u2019t take the landfill away from the man.\u201d<\/strong> This entry makes a similar point, but without alluding to any proverbs: \u201cHe misses his job at the landfill.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            I like this caption\u2014\u201cAt least I got him to bag the trash this month\u201d<\/strong>\u2014but why does it end with the words \u201cthis month?\u201d That\u2019s not the punchline. The punchline is \u201cbag the trash,\u201d and the caption should end with those words. Here\u2019s a better variation on the same joke: \u201cI finally got him to put his trash in bags.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Here’s a reference to Marie Kondo: \u201cHe says he can\u2019t toss it because it sparks joy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Here\u2019s a superior version of one of my captions: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t remind me of being at the beach.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            And here\u2019s a good lawyer joke: \u201cMy divorce lawyer says I\u2019ll probably get half.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            These next three captions allude to the woman\u2019s dissatisfaction with the state of her relationship with the trash collector:<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. \u201cThis might be the last straw for me.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
            2. \u201cApparently, I\u2019m the only thing he can do without.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
            3. \u201cHe never takes me out, either.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              While this entry makes the woman seem less critical: \u201cHe\u2019s doing his best to reduce the landfills.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

              These captions have the woman ignoring the most evident and pressing problem and complaining about a much less significant issue:<\/p>\n

                \n
              1. \u201cThe beard is beginning to bother me.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
              2. \u201cThe beard has to go.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
              3. \u201cWhat are you staring at?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                And this entry presumes that the woman and the man deserve each other because they\u2019re equally stubborn: \u201cIt\u2019s his turn to take the trash out.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                This entry, which I love, is unique because it assumes that the woman who\u2019s speaking is commenting not on her<\/em> relationship with the trash collector, but on the other woman\u2019s<\/em> relationship with him: \u201cWell, you do have a type.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                I had a hard time choosing a winner this week\u2014there were a lot of strong contenders\u2014but I\u2019m going with, \u201cI finally got him to put his trash in bags.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                ENTER THIS WEEK’S CAPTION CONTEST<\/a><\/p>\n

                Lawrence Wood has won The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting seven times and been a finalist two other times. He has collaborated with New Yorker cartoonists Peter Kuper, Lila Ash, Felipe Galindo Gomez, and Harry Bliss (until Bliss tossed him aside, as anyone would, to collaborate with Steve Martin). Nine of his collaborations have appeared in The New Yorker, and one is included in the New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons. <\/em><\/p>\n
