He\u2019s glaring down at the bride and groom and minister. The bride, who looks more disappointed or apologetic than shocked, is speaking.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Othello<\/em>, jealousy is personified as \u201c<strong>the\u00a0green-eyed monster<\/strong>,\u201d so I thought this monster might be an old boyfriend who\u2019s still obsessed with the bride and furious that she\u2019s marrying someone else.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cYou know how jealous the green-eyed ones can be.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s not just the green-eyed ones who get jealous.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe green-eyed ones just can\u2019t let go.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I have never seen and will never watch the reality-TV show \u201cBridezillas,\u201d but I know it exists. The title refers to extremely difficult and controlling women who are engaged to be married. (Why would anyone watch let alone marry such women?) Given the Godzilla-like creature in the cartoon, I thought I should come up with a reference to these termagants: <strong>\u201cHe wanted me to be his bridezilla.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I then came up with a couple more references to Godzilla, the Japanese monster created by exposure to atomic radiation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cWe dated years ago in Tokyo.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cWe used to date, but the relationship was toxic.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now let\u2019s see how you did:<\/p>\n<p>This contest is especially challenging because it\u2019s not entirely clear who\u2019s speaking. I assumed the bride was delivering the line that must serve as the caption, but many of you thought it was the minister. I\u2019m therefore going to begin this section of my commentary by highlighting the best such entries. Most alluded to the minister\u2019s obligation to ask whether anyone present knows of any reason why the couple should not be joined in holy matrimony:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cIt seems we do have an objection.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cIt seems we have an objection.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cDoes anyone <em>else<\/em> have any objections?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cDoes anyone else object?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cAnyone else object?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cApparently someone does object.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Others were a variation on \u201cyou may now kiss the bride:\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cYou may now kiss the bride goodbye.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYou may now kiss your ass goodbye.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYou may now run for your lives.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Chapter 10, Verse 9 of the Gospels according to Mark states that, \u201cWhat therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.\u201d One of you submitted a clever variation on that passage: <strong>\u201cWhat God has put together let no monster tear asunder.\u201d<\/strong> I\u2019d like that caption better, though, if it hewed a little closer to the original line by substituting the words \u201chath joined\u201d for \u201chas put.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A couple of you acknowledged that the minister, eager to get away from the rampaging monster, might rush through the ceremony:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cYada yada yada I now pronounce you husband and wife.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cUhhhhhhhhh\u2026\u2026\u2026tildeathdoyoupartamen!\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That second entry draws out the first word longer than necessary and has too many ellipses. Still, I like it.<\/p>\n<p>I also like this variation on the words a minister uses to inform\/warn the wedding guests that the married couple have composed their own vows: <strong>\u201cThe bride and groom have written their own last words.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a nice and subtle reference to ring bearers: <strong>\u201cTraditionally, a small child or <em>maybe<\/em> a dog\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll conclude this \u201cminister speaking\u201d section of the commentary with this entry: <strong>\u201cWe are gathered here today in the sight of Godzilla\u2026\u201d<\/strong> That\u2019s good, but shouldn\u2019t \u201csight\u201d be \u201cpresence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of you presumed the groom was speaking and turned him into Henny Youngman: \u00a0<strong>\u201cTake my wife\u2026please!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A couple of you assumed the monster is speaking and submitted nearly identical entries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cI object!\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI object.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To no one&#8217;s surprise, I prefer the second version, but I can also see an argument for including the exclamation point.<\/p>\n<p>The typical caption is a quote. Sometimes, however, the caption is really a title. Several weeks ago, for instance, we featured a cartoon by Jon Adams that showed a bird flying through a window into a living room. The winning entry was <em>Invasive Species<\/em>. For the current contest we received several titles, and these were the best two:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Godzilla meets Bridezilla. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Japanese remake of the American film The Graduate.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That second caption is clever, but it explains too much. Delete the words \u201cthe American film\u201d (and italicize the film\u2019s title), and you have a much stronger entry.<\/p>\n<p>Now, on to the entries that presume, as I did, that the bride is speaking.<\/p>\n<p>I really like, <strong>\u201cWhich may be any second now.\u201d<\/strong> It presumes the reader (1) \u00a0is familiar with the phrase \u201ctil death us do part,\u201d part of the marriage liturgy from the Book of Common Prayer, and (2) understands that the bride must have just said those words before delivering the line that serves as the caption. Unlike entries that over-explain the joke\u2014something I guess I\u2019m doing right now\u2014this one respects the reader\u2019s intelligence, and that\u2019s refreshing.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the nearly 1,000 entries we received this week, only one made a reference to the green-eyed monster: <strong>\u201cJealousy is truly a green-eyed monster!\u201d<\/strong> I like the idea behind this caption, but it over-explains (and doesn\u2019t trust the reader to get) the joke. Also the exclamation point doesn\u2019t match the bride\u2019s expression. She doesn\u2019t look shocked or terrified, so the caption should end with a simple period.<\/p>\n<p>There were many references to bridezilla, but these were the best:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe overheard you say that you were getting married to a bridezilla.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have tweeted I\u2019m a bridezilla.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Similar entries made it clear that the bride was not going to let anything interfere with her big day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cJust focus on the question, Phil.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cJust keep going.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI think the only thing you\u2019re terrified of right now is commitment.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two of you assumed the monster was Godzilla and alluded to the fact that he comes from the Land of the Rising Sun:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cPerhaps Tokyo was not the right venue.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe\u2019s just someone I dated when I lived in Japan.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like that last caption, this entry presumes the monster is an old boyfriend: <strong>\u201cHe\u2019s the one I didn\u2019t tell you about.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the next set of entries, the bride is trying to look on the bright side:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe video rights will finance our honeymoon.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cAt least now we don\u2019t have to worry about divorce.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cDarling, I promise to make the next seventeen seconds the happiest of our lives.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There were a lot of mother-in-law jokes, but I preferred these references to other relatives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cPretend he isn\u2019t there, just like your dad does to me.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI guess we all have that one uncle.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are a few references to the celebration that immediately follows the wedding ceremony:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe\u2019s not usually like this until the reception.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI said we\u2019d need more than heavy hors d\u2019oeuvres for the reception.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cAsk him if he prefers chicken or fish.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a clever twist on the kind of snide comment people sometimes make about another person\u2019s relationship: <strong>\u201cI give this marriage about ten seconds.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love the brevity of this next entry, and the way it underscores the bride\u2019s skewed perspective: \u00a0<strong>\u201cOh great. What if it rains?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still, the one that made me laugh out loud was, <strong>\u201cI think the only thing you\u2019re terrified of right now is commitment.\u201d<\/strong> And that is this week\u2019s winner.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cartoonstock.com\/blog\/cartoon-caption-contest\/\" class=\"button\">ENTER THIS WEEK&#8217;S CAPTION CONTEST<\/a><\/p>\n<p>  <em>Lawrence Wood has won The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting seven times and been a finalist two other times. He has collaborated with New Yorker cartoonists Peter Kuper, Lila Ash, Felipe Galindo Gomez, and Harry Bliss (until Bliss tossed him aside, as anyone would, to collaborate with Steve Martin).
