Two librarians, one male and one female, are looking at a cadaver that\u2019s on a bookcase in front of a \u201cnew arrivals\u201d sign. The female librarian is speaking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Because corpses need cold environments, I thought the librarian might be instructing her colleague to lower the temperature:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cTurn down the thermostat.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With the rise of digital media, are books and newspapers a thing of the past? I hope not, but that possibility led to my next caption:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cPrint is dead, too.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">My next two captions were inspired by librarians who constantly remind patrons to lower their voices:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe won\u2019t have to shush them&#8221; <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;At least they\u2019re quiet.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I then imagined the librarians trying to decide which section the cadavers belong in:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI don\u2019t know whether to put them in horror or true crime.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Finally, I focused on the \u201cnew arrivals\u201d sign:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThey\u2019re actually the new dead-on-arrivals.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now let\u2019s see how you did:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There were a shockingly high number of good puns (a record-setting fourteen).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Several turned on a common expression\u2019s double meaning:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI think they\u2019re already checked out.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSorry, they\u2019re checked out.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cOur check out system needs to be revised.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf they\u2019re checked out, why are they still here?\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Others turned on the double meaning of a single word:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cBrand new and it already has a broken spine.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI always end up cracking their spine.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe spine should be facing out.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two focused on the sign in front of one of the cadavers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cLet\u2019s change the sign to\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">new dead on arrivals<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cRedo the sign. These are new departures.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I like this reference to an Edward Albee classic:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cBe very afraid of Virginia Woolf.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s been forty years since \u201cQueen\u201d released the second biggest hit of their career, which served as the inspiration for this pun:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAnother one bites the dust jacket.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two entrants submitted this reference to a library classification system:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe use the Dewey Decimate System.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you take a common expression for making anatomical bequests and add a one-word literary reference at the end, you get one of this week\u2019s strongest puns: <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThey donated their bodies to science fiction.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019ll conclude this unusually long section on puns with a caption that identifies the cadavers:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis is our dead poets\u2019 section.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many of you thought the cadavers belonged in a different section:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cMove them to Mystery\/Suspense.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cLet\u2019s move them to the Mystery section.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThey belong in Mysteries.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThese get shelved under Mystery.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cPut them with the autobiographies. No one goes there.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I like the way that last caption has the librarians trying to hide the bodies, but it doesn\u2019t quite work because autobiographies and memoirs are, I believe, quite popular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This presumes the librarian is responsible for the dead bodies:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI don\u2019t make the overdue policies. I just enforce them.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Like I did, many of you focused on the fact that librarians like silence:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0it\u2019s quiet.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAt least they went quietly.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cNow it\u2019s a little too quiet in here.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf this wasn\u2019t a library, I\u2019d scream.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cYes, very quiet\u2026but they\u2019re still disturbing the other patrons.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThere\u2019s no need to shush these guys.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAt least we don\u2019t have to shush them.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHey, at least they\u2019re quiet.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That last caption is very similar to one of mine, but it includes an unnecessary first word, which is why I prefer the shorter entry that\u2019s identical to mine:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAt least they\u2019re quiet.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Unfortunately, I don\u2019t think I can choose a caption that\u2019s identical to one of mine as the winner. It wouldn\u2019t seem right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Here are two captions that are similar to but actually better than two of mine:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cDoes it seem cold in here to you?\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cYou know what else is dead? Print.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A captionless cartoon that features dead bodies will inevitably elicit suicide jokes, which run the risk of being distasteful or even cruel. But they can also be funny, like these two entries:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI guess the self-help section didn\u2019t really help.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cMaybe we should start a Beyond Help section.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you think those captions are in bad taste, you\u2019re really not going to like this:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe children\u2019s section is even more upsetting.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> That\u2019s a good, sick joke. The only problem is that the librarians appear to already be in the children\u2019s section, as the one legible book title is \u201cThomas the Train.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019m highlighting this next entry, which I really like, in honor of my former boss, Diana White, a voracious reader who was not intimidated by great literature\u2014she received her Ph.D. in Classics and Classical Literature from the University of Chicago\u2014but who once told me that she would \u201cgo to [her] grave never having read Proust.\u201d Diana, this caption\u2019s for you:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThey died trying to finish\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Remembrance of Things Past<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many academics and students complain that the English literary canon focuses too much or even exclusively on dead, white male authors. This entry recognizes that complaint:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAdmittedly, our selection consists of a lot of dead white males.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This caption approaches the problem of dead writers from a less political angle:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI keep telling them we need to feature more living authors.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I like the way these entries note that libraries function as educational centers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cA little knowledge is a dangerous thing.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe dead have so much to teach us.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As (almost) always, I will conclude with several strong captions that don\u2019t fit neatly into any category:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cEverybody loves a good Mystery.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI was told to put them in the stacks.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cApparently I\u2019m also now the coroner.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI still can\u2019t figure out how they got them through the book return slot.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThese aren\u2019t going to re-shelve themselves.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve ever before highlighted that many entries\u2014nearly 5% of the number submitted. Choosing a winner is, as always, a difficult task, but I\u2019m going with,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cMaybe we should start a Beyond Help section.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cartoonstock.com\/blog\/cartoon-caption-contest\/\" class=\"button\">ENTER THIS WEEK&#8217;S CAPTION CONTEST<\/a><\/p>\n<p>  <em>Lawrence Wood has won The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting seven times and been a finalist two other times. He has collaborated with New Yorker cartoonists Peter Kuper, Lila Ash, Felipe Galindo Gomez, and Harry Bliss (until Bliss tossed him aside, as anyone would, to collaborate with Steve Martin).
