Swimming around the octopus are several fish, one of whom, in the lower-left corner of the drawing, is speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a pun that alludes both to the pillory\u2019s use as a punishment for convicted criminals and to a way of preparing octopus: <strong>\u201cHe confessed before they could grill him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To humiliate criminals, pillories were erected in public places where crowds could taunt the offender by hurling insults and rotten vegetables. That depressing fact inspired my next two captions (the second of which is also a reference to a James Bond novel):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cAs if having eight limbs and a bulbous head wasn\u2019t humiliating enough.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI dare you to call him Octopussy.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My last caption is a reference to the color of octopus blood and the fact that members of the elite often escape punishment for their crimes: <strong>\u201cThey don\u2019t usually do that to blue bloods.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s see how you did.<\/p>\n<p>A pillory could not hold an octopus\u2014even one that weighs 600 pounds can squeeze through a quarter-sized hole\u2014as these captions acknowledge:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t worry boss, this time I locked him in there extra tight.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cIs it me or could he just slip right out of there?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThey know he doesn\u2019t have bones, right?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThat should hold him for a good minute or so.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe can get out anytime \u2013 he just likes the attention.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cLet\u2019s see him wiggle his way out of this one.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That last caption is a fine example of taking a common expression and giving it a new meaning within the context of the drawing.<\/p>\n<p>Like the last six entries, the next two also allude to the fact that the octopus is boneless:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cBut he doesn\u2019t have a bad bone in his body.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe\u2019s not just a scoundrel, he\u2019s a spineless scoundrel.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many of you assumed the octopus had been convicted of a sex-related crime:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe was getting a little handsy.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHandsy, that one.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI heard it was for groping.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cGroping. Multiple counts.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe tried to grab her by the octopussy.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on that last caption, I\u2019m not the only James Bond fan (and Trump critic).<\/p>\n<p>Another Bond fan has the fish verbally harassing the octopus by yelling, <strong>\u201cHey Pussy!\u201d<\/strong> But here\u2019s the problem: the fish that\u2019s speaking does not look like he\u2019s addressing the octopus\u2014he appears to be talking to another fish\u2014and he doesn\u2019t look hostile. Still, I appreciate the idea (but shouldn\u2019t there be a comma after the word \u201cHey?\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>One of you submitted a disturbing pun suggesting that the octopus was a sex offender who had to stay away from children: <strong>\u201cHe was warned to stay away from schools.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an entry that does not identify the specific crime the octopus committed but suggests it must have been shockingly awful: <strong>\u201cWhatever it was must have been bad seeing as eating each other is a way of life here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many of you mistakenly assumed the octopus was in the stocks, which are used only to restrain the offender\u2019s feet. A pillory is (like the device in the cartoon) erected on a post and has holes for securing the offender\u2019s head and hands. Maybe, however, the distinction between the stocks and a pillory is, for the purposes of a caption contest, one without a difference. I\u2019m therefore going to highlight the best of the stocks entries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe\u2019s the last one we have in stock.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s not often that we have fresh octopus in stock.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cBetter in the stocks than in the stock.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The next two entries recognize that a fish cannot harass the pilloried offender in one of the traditional ways (by throwing vegetables at him):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cHow do we throw things at him?\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI wish I had a rotten tomato to throw. And arms to throw it. And no water resistance.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I love how that rather long second caption identifies every reason it would be impossible to pelt the octopus with produce.<\/p>\n<p>While alluding to the pillory\u2019s wooden frame and the undersea location, the next two puns cleverly refer to a banned interrogation technique:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cIs that waterboarding?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI thought waterboarding was illegal.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s a clever reference to both the number of tentacles and a 2018 Sandra Bullock film about a jewelry heist: <strong>\u201cThey finally caught Ocean\u2019s Eight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And whoever submitted this caption knows that an octopus has more brains than tentacles: <strong>\u201cWith nine brains, you think he\u2019d know better.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like I did, one of you recognized that a slang term for interrogating a criminal suspect also refers to a method of preparing an octopus dish: <strong>\u201cTake him out and grill him.\u201d<\/strong> Another entrant relied on the double meaning of a term for executing a convicted criminal: <strong>\u201cHe\u2019s going to fry.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve already highlighted a lot of puns, but three more that deserve attention:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cToo bad his lawyer wasn\u2019t a shark.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe\u2019s heavily armed, but not dangerous.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cOk, Dad, I\u2019ll stay in school.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, here\u2019s a caption that focuses on one aspect of the cartoon that everyone else ignored: <strong>\u201cThat padlock is just gonna rust.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s winner is, <strong>\u201cThat should hold him for a good minute or so.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cartoonstock.com\/blog\/cartoon-caption-contest\/\" class=\"button\">ENTER THIS WEEK&#8217;S CAPTION CONTEST<\/a><\/p>\n<p>  <em>Lawrence Wood has won The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting seven times and been a finalist two other times. He has collaborated with New Yorker cartoonists Peter Kuper, Lila Ash, Felipe Galindo Gomez, and Harry Bliss (until Bliss tossed him aside, as anyone would, to collaborate with Steve Martin).
