To their right, drinking by himself, is a pig in a suit. One of the businessmen is saying something to the other, who\u2019s looking sideways at the pig.<\/p>\n<p>Because pigs are dirty, I came up with these two captions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cI\u2019m surprised he ordered it neat.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe\u2019s neither clean nor sober.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I then alluded to the famous nursery rhyme:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cThat little piggy played the market.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThat little piggy got smashed.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When I was young, misogynists were called male chauvinist pigs, so I thought the businessman might be saying: <strong>\u201cAnd they call <em>us<\/em> sexist?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, I combined references to the three little pigs and one of Martin Scorsese\u2019s films: <strong>\u201cHe got fired by the big bad wolf of Wall Street.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s see how you did.<\/p>\n<p>There were many puns this week, and these ten were surprisingly good:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe\u2019s a banker.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI hope he gets his baby back.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t know this was a swine bar.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe caught his wife with another pig in a blanket.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThere&#8217;s too much pork in Washington.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe&#8217;s managed to stay clean since leaving the pen.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYou know, though, he might be a <em>capitalist<\/em>.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cLook who just pork bellied up to the bar.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe wasn&#8217;t always so pig-headed.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cSuch a boar.\u201d<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are the best allusions to the Mother Goose rhyme:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cThis little piggy majored in Marketing.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThis little piggy went into market research.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cBad day in the market.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are the best references to the three little pigs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;I do know that he lives in a brick house.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;That&#8217;s the developer that&#8217;s building all the brick townhouses.&#8221; <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;I understand that his two siblings were not as successful in real estate.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Wrongful death suit over his two brothers.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And here are the best dirty pig captions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cThere&#8217;s rich &#8212; and then there&#8217;s stinking, filthy rich.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe cleans up nice.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;d think he&#8217;d order a dirty martini.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This sports reference doubles as a dark joke: <strong>\u201cHis whole family is in the NFL.\u201d<\/strong> And the best sick joke suggests that the pig\u2019s trying to drown his sorrows: <strong>\u201cHe lost his family at a luau.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As this entry acknowledges, \u201cpig\u201d is a derogatory term for the police: <strong>\u201cStay cool. Undercover cop at 3 o&#8217;clock.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a fitting reference to a very successful advertising campaign for pork: <strong>\u201cThe other white-collar.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This next caption explains how the pig became, against all odds, such a successful businessman: <strong>\u201cHe broke through the corrugated ceiling.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And this entry serves as a commentary on the cartoonist\u2019s decision to draw all his human characters as neckless wonders: <strong>\u201cI&#8217;d kill for that neck.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Take a common expression used to indicate that something will never happen, combine it with a method used to prevent terrorists from boarding commercial aircraft, and you get the following caption: <strong>\u201cI&#8217;ve heard that he&#8217;s on the no-fly list.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the next entry, the businessman\u2019s explaining why he made a particular toast: <strong>\u201cBut he does have mud in his eye.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This caption suggests the businessman is pretty hostile while noting that bacon comes from pigs: <strong>\u201cI eat guys like him for breakfast.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And, finally, this caption notes that one part of the pig is shaped like a corkscrew: <strong>\u201cThey just opened a bottle of wine with his tail.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s winner is a pun: <strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t know this was a swine bar.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cartoonstock.com\/blog\/cartoon-caption-contest\/\" class=\"button\">ENTER THIS WEEK&#8217;S CAPTION CONTEST<\/a><\/p>\n<p>  <em>Lawrence Wood has won The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting seven times and been a finalist two other times. He has collaborated with New Yorker cartoonists Peter Kuper, Lila Ash, Felipe Galindo Gomez, and Harry Bliss (until Bliss tossed him aside, as anyone would, to collaborate with Steve Martin). Nine of his collaborations have appeared in The New Yorker, and one is included in the New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lars Kenseth\u2019s cartoon is set in a bar, where two businessmen are having a drink.
