The host is addressing a couple who are waiting to get in. He\u2019s speaking directly to the man, who\u2019s wearing suit pants.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m an attorney, and during the pandemic I have appeared in Zoom court countless times but have never once worn pants. I, therefore, submitted, \u201cI blame Zoom.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the \u201870s, many restaurant owners tried to keep out hippies by posting signs on their front doors that read, \u201cNo Shirts, No Shoes, No Service.\u201d My first caption (\u201cNo shorts, no service\u201d<\/strong>) is a variation on that common phrase. I especially like the way shirts, shoes, and shorts all begin with the \u201csh\u201d sound.<\/p>\n

Because most fancy restaurants have a room where you can check your coat, I came up with these two captions:<\/p>\n

  1. \u201cWould you like to check your pants?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. \u201cWe do have a pants check.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    My final two captions highlight the discomfort of the man who\u2019s wearing suit pants and play on the double meaning of the last word in this question: \u201cDo you have a reservation?\u201d<\/p>\n

    1. \u201cIt appears you have reservations.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. \u201cNo, I don\u2019t mean reservations about that.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Many of you acknowledged that the pandemic has forced everyone to spend an inordinate amount of time on Zoom, where pants are optional:<\/p>\n

      5. \u201cEveryone is still in Zoom mode.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
      6. \u201cWe all got way too used to Zoom.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
      7. \u201cSorry, Zoom attire only.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              2. \u201cThey cut them off after two drinks.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                And here\u2019s the best sex joke: \u201cMy eyes are up here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                I assumed the host is addressing the man, but this entry suggests he\u2019s addressing the woman: \u201cHe\u2019s not getting in here dressed like that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                I mentioned earlier that I appear in Zoom court without pants, but this next entry suggests that judicial robes make it possible for judges to appear in court without pants even during in-person proceedings: \u201cActually, we\u2019re all judges.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                This entry puts a spin on a common term: \u201cSemi-formal.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                And the next two captions have the host implying that the man in suit pants has improper motives for refusing to wear denim shorts:<\/p>\n

                2. \u201cAlways the rebel, eh?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  I\u2019ll conclude this week\u2019s commentary with, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, but there\u2019s a dress code.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  I didn\u2019t highlight very many captions this week\u2014only 2% of the 815 submitted\u2014but that\u2019s partly because so many entries went after the same joke (and many entrants submitted the exact same caption). That said, the competition among the highlighted entries is typically strong. The best, in my opinion, is, \u201cI\u2019m guessing you don\u2019t work from home?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  Lawrence Wood has won The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting seven times and been a finalist four other times. He has collaborated with New Yorker cartoonists Peter Kuper, Lila Ash, Felipe Galindo Gomez, and Harry Bliss (until Bliss tossed him aside, as anyone would, to collaborate with Steve Martin).
