The jester has opened a box, out of which many doves have appeared and flown straight out the window. Both the king, who looks upset, and the jester, who looks surprised, are watching the doves fly away. The jester is speaking.<\/p>\n<p>My first caption was, <strong>\u201cOh, fuck.\u201d<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t really address the medieval setting\u2014it\u2019s more of a universal caption like, \u201cChrist, what an asshole\u201d\u2014but it matches the jester\u2019s expression and conveys his realization that this one minor mishap might get him killed. It\u2019s also concise.<\/p>\n<p>I next suggested that the jester was surprised the window was simply an opening in the wall:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cNo screen?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI just thought the windowpane was really clean.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s open to the air? What do you do in the winter?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Court jesters were known for telling jokes\u2014not performing magic tricks\u2014so I started thinking about the relationship between stand-up comics and magicians:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cMan, and I thought comedy was hard.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cComedy is easy. Magic is hard.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe magician who was supposed to open for me called in sick.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHow do Penn and Teller do comedy <em>and<\/em> magic?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, I suggested that the jester was especially disappointed and the king was especially angry because the birds were intended as a present for the king\u2019s daughter: <strong>\u201cAnd these are for your\u2026princess.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s see how you did.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a good caption that could have been great: <strong>\u201cAnd&#8230;Viola! Damn, nothing is going right today my queen.\u201d<\/strong> The first two words are unnecessary. I assume they\u2019re included because they show the jester making the first of several mistakes (\u201cViola\u201d instead of Voila\u201d), but that\u2019s like beginning a joke with the punch line. The caption is stronger if the jester compounds one error, letting the birds fly out the window, with just one more mistake by calling the king \u201cmy queen.\u201d And that brings me to my final point. There should be a comma before the words, \u201cmy queen.\u201d The comma\u2019s essential not only because it\u2019s grammatically correct; it provides the split-second pause that really makes the joke work. If this caption had been \u201cDamn, nothing is going right today, my queen,\u201d it would have been this week\u2019s winner.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of missing commas, I think one should appear between the only two words in this beautifully concise entry: <strong>\u201cWell shit.\u201d<\/strong> I\u2019m particularly fond of that entry because it makes me feel less guilty about sharing my equally short and vulgar caption. Here\u2019s a one-word and less offensive variation on the same joke: <strong>\u201cAbracadohcrap.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like I did, several of you focused on the fact that the window is open to the air:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cWho took the storm windows down?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cWho left that window open?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHas that never had glass?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201c&#8230;Perhaps I could interest you in double glazing?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cUmmm&#8230;I also sell shutters.\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That last caption would be better without the \u201cUmmm\u2026\u201d And why does the caption before it begin with ellipses? They can be used at the end of a sentence to indicate an incomplete thought, or in the middle of a sentence to denote hesitation, but they serve no purpose at the beginning of a sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The next three entries highlight the jester\u2019s realization that he\u2019s in a lot of trouble:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cFor my next trick, I&#8217;ll make myself disappear.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThere goes the flock and my head&#8217;s on a block.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cNow I kind of miss working from home.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That last entry doubles as the week\u2019s best pandemic-related joke.<\/p>\n<p>There were a lot of captions that focused on the fact that cars and statues are often covered in bird droppings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cPlease tell me you didn&#8217;t just wash your carriage.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThey appear to be heading straight for your statue.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI guess they prefer your statue.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cNot on the king&#8217;s statue!\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cIf this angers you, you should see what they&#8217;re doing to your statue&#8230;\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again with the ellipses. At least they appear at the end of that last caption and not the beginning, but are they necessary? Not here, because they don\u2019t indicate an incomplete thought. I\u2019m guessing some people like to put ellipses at the end of a caption because it\u2019s the equivalent of pausing and waiting for the laugh, but they should be used sparingly.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the best of several entries that use doves as a symbol of harmony: <strong>\u201cI guess you&#8217;re declaring peace now.\u201d<\/strong> This next entry suggests they are also a symbol of achieving peace by ending a conflict\u2014<strong>\u201cI guess we just surrendered\u201d<\/strong>\u2014but whoever submitted that was confusing white doves with white flags.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some clever references to a well-known English nursery rhyme:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Wait, Sire. I still have 24 blackbirds.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThey heard about the four and twenty blackbirds.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As I often do, I\u2019ll conclude this commentary with a few strong entries that don\u2019t fit neatly into any category:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cI said I could make them disappear. I didn&#8217;t say how.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m more of a fool than a jester.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cLet&#8217;s skip sawing the princess in half.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That last caption made me laugh out loud, but it comes in just behind this week\u2019s winning entry: <strong>\u201cHas that never had glass?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/cartoonstock.com\/blog\/cartoon-caption-contest\/\">ENTER THIS WEEK&#8217;S CAPTION CONTEST<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Lawrence Wood has won The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting seven times and been a finalist four other times. He has collaborated with New Yorker cartoonists Peter Kuper, Lila Ash, Felipe Galindo Gomez, and Harry Bliss (until Bliss tossed him aside, as anyone would, to collaborate with Steve Martin).
