\"captionThis collaboration between David K. Ostow (the cartoonist) and Dan J. Salomon (the idea man) is set in a police station. On the wall is an investigation board covered with push-pins connected by strings. On the floor is a cat in a police uniform who\u2019s playing with the end of one string. A plainclothes detective is saying something about the cat to a uniformed officer.<\/p>\n

This contest is especially challenging because the drawing does not need a caption. The sight of a police cat distracted by the string on an investigation board is already funny. Nevertheless, I get paid to suggest captions\u2014not to explain why they\u2019re sometimes unnecessary. Here are my three:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u201cHow about declawing the police?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. \u201cI miss the K-9 unit.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. \u201cGood cop\/bad kitty?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Now let\u2019s see how you did.<\/p>\n

    Many entries noted that the only animal suited to assist the police is a dog:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. “Whoever heard of a feline division?”<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. \u201cDisband the feline unit.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    3. “I wish we could afford a K-9 Unit.”<\/strong><\/li>\n
    4. “Four legs and a tail does not make it a canine.”<\/strong><\/li>\n
    5. \u201cThis never happened with the canine unit.”<\/strong><\/li>\n
    6. \u201cI really miss the K-9 unit.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    7. \u201cWhy did we ever get rid of the canine division?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    8. \u201cPolice dogs, it is.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      A similar set of dog-related entries added a reference to the movement to reallocate funds that are currently used to support police departments:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. “This is what happens when you defund the police dogs.”<\/strong><\/li>\n
      2. “They defunded the police dogs.”<\/strong><\/li>\n
      3. “They defunded K9.”<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        And these two captions focus exclusively on the movement to defund the police:<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. \u201cMaybe it\u2019s time to declaw the police.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
        2. \u201cTime to de-claw the police.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Each of the next two entries alludes to a different well-known phrase about cats:<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. \u201cShe also got our primary suspect\u2019s tongue.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
          2. “His curiosity is killing us.”<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            The following captions take a line one might hear in a cop show and give it a new and fitting meaning within the context of the drawing:<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. “He just goes with his instincts.”<\/strong><\/li>\n
            2. “He’s a little unorthodox, but he gets results.”<\/strong><\/li>\n
            3. \u201cOur whole case is unraveling.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
            4. “I told you the loose ends were going to be a problem.”<\/strong><\/li>\n
            5. \u201cHe hates loose ends.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
            6. \u201cI told you no loose ends.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              That last caption needs a comma after the word \u201cyou.\u201d<\/p>\n

              Here are the week\u2019s best puns:<\/p>\n

                \n
              1. \u201cI\u2019m putting him back on the mice squad.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
              2. \u201cThe last collar he had was for fleas.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                These two entries suggest alternatives to an investigation board that has strings:<\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. \u201cThe captain won\u2019t hear of a slide presentation.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
                2. \u201cNext time use a magic marker.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  And this caption is for cat-lovers: “I’d have her badge for this, if only I could stay mad at her.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  This week\u2019s winner is, \u201cMaybe it\u2019s time to declaw the police.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  ENTER THE CAPTION CONTEST<\/a><\/p>\n

                  Lawrence Wood has won The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting seven times and been a finalist four other times. He has collaborated with New Yorker cartoonists Peter Kuper, Lila Ash, Felipe Galindo Gomez, and Harry Bliss (until Bliss tossed him aside, as anyone would, to collaborate with Steve Martin).
