\"LawrenceLike many of you, I have lost The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest hundreds of times. But I\u2019ve won it more than anyone else, so Bob Mankoff thought I might have something useful to say about the contest he recently started running on this website.<\/p>\n

Each week I will write about the most recently concluded contest, delving into my process for thinking of captions, and then highlighting some of your entries (those I particularly liked, and maybe a few I hated) to find out what works, what doesn\u2019t, and why. I won\u2019t look at your entries until after coming up with my own captions.<\/p>\n

I am not allowed to enter the CartoonStock contest\u2014I\u2019ve been banned\u2014and I have nothing to do with selecting each week\u2019s winning caption and two finalists. That\u2019s someone else\u2019s job. I\u2019m here solely to provide some insight that may help you win The New Yorker\u2019s caption contest (for those who want to brag about getting published in the magazine) or this latest version (for those who want $100).<\/p>\n

\"EllisThe contest that ended last week featured Ellis Rosen\u2019s drawing of an airborne job interview. The older man\u2014the one conducting the interview\u2014is speaking, and therefore delivering the line that must address both the interview process and flying through the air while suspended from balloons.<\/p>\n

The drawing initially reminded me of the animated movie, \u201cUp,\u201d so my first and not very good idea was, \u201cWhy do you want to work for Pixar?\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

I then thought about typical interview questions that would take on atypically interesting meanings in the context of the drawing, such as \u201cTell me how you deal with work-related challenges,\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cDo you have any questions for me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I next tried to connect the office setting to floating through the air with, \u201cSome people are distracted by the open office plan.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I then tried to think of business expressions that could be connected to the balloons. \u201cPut a pin in it,\u201d a phrase used by management types to mean, \u201clet\u2019s come back to that later,\u201d led to, \u201cHold that thought, but don\u2019t put a pin in anything.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, I focused on the words \u201cjob\u201d and \u201cinterview,\u201d which led to \u201cIt\u2019s a dream job, but only because you\u2019re dreaming,\u201d<\/strong> and, \u201cCan you land the interview?\u201d<\/strong> This last caption is, like the standard interview questions above, a common line that takes on an entirely new meaning in the context of the drawing.<\/p>\n

Now, let\u2019s take a look at some of your entries. There were almost 3,000, and many focused on the word \u201cinflation,\u201d which cleverly and concisely addresses both business concerns and balloons. My favorite such caption, however, was, \u201cWe worry more about deflation.\u201d<\/strong> It\u2019s short and reconciles the disparate frames of reference\u2014two essential qualities of a successful caption\u2014but adds another interesting element (a fear of falling) missing from similar entries.<\/p>\n

Many of you referenced \u201cthe cloud,\u201d a reference I would have dismissed as too obvious had I been smart enough to think of it myself.\u00a0 Many of these entries, however, were too long or buried the punchline (\u201cthe cloud\u201d) in the middle of the caption. That\u2019s why I liked, \u201cWe\u2019re moving to the cloud.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although I assumed the drawing depicted part of a hiring process, some of you saw it as just the opposite and came up with several good captions, including, \u201cWe\u2019re letting you go.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Like I did, many of you thought of typical interview questions (or clever variations on these questions) that took on different meanings in the context of the drawing. The best of these included, \u201cTell me about a time you were in a stressful situation\u201d<\/strong> (similar to but better than my own \u201cwork-related challenges\u201d caption), \u201cWhere do you see yourself in five minutes?\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cAny problems finding us?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of you submitted, \u201cSo you\u2019re trying to land a desk job?\u201d<\/strong> That\u2019s similar to my \u201cland the interview\u201d<\/strong> caption but better because people talk more about landing a job than landing an interview.<\/p>\n

Several captions referenced traveling for work, but the best of these addressed the fact that anyone tethered to balloons has little control over his destination. My favorite: \u201cThis job involves travel to who knows where.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some of the best captions not only make sense of a bizarre drawing but truly surprise the reader. That\u2019s why I love, \u201cSpiders. You?\u201d<\/strong> Although this entry loses points for ignoring the fact that the characters are floating high in the air because of balloons<\/em>, it adds another completely unexpected but fitting angle (a discussion of common phobias, including the applicant\u2019s fear of heights). And it accomplishes this goal with just two words.<\/p>\n

ENTER THE CAPTION CONTEST<\/a><\/p>\n

Lawrence Wood has won The New Yorker\u2019s Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting seven times and been a finalist four other times. He has collaborated with New Yorker cartoonists Peter Kuper, Lila Ash, Felipe Galindo Gomez, and Harry Bliss (until Bliss tossed him aside, as anyone would, to collaborate with Steve Martin).
