Our second $1,000 contest was not easy. I came up with just one caption<\/span>\u2014\u201cJewish firms have a Golem\u201d\u2014<\/span><\/i>but we received a bunch of strong entries from you. This month\u2019s judges included our regulars\u2014Bob Mankoff, Trevor Hoey, Joel Mishon, and I\u2014plus Ellis Rosen, who drew the cartoon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We rated the submissions independently without knowing the entrants\u2019 identities. Consensus was hard to reach. I will therefore highlight every caption that at least one of us had in their top ten.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with an entry\u2014<\/span>\u201cThey do this every April 16\u201d<\/b>\u2014that\u2019s similar to Ellis Rosen\u2019s original caption: \u201cI always forget that Tax Day is rooted in pagan traditions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0And now for the puns:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u201cI\u2019m reporting this to Human Sacrifices Resources.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
  2. \u201cVery convincing straw man argument.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
  3. \u201cThis is it \u2013 the Final Accounting.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
  4. \u201cThis is my first year at Earning Man.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
  5. \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s the Lord of the Files.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In the movie \u201cThe Wicker Man\u201d\u2014the brilliant original from 1973, not the abominable remake from 2006\u2014the residents of a secluded island make a human sacrifice to ensure a good harvest. These entries put a corporate spin on such rituals:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. \u201cOne downturn in billable hours and things get serious.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
    2. \u201cIf this doesn\u2019t lower inflation, I don\u2019t know what will.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
    3. \u201cHR really goes out for Midsommar Fridays.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
    4. \u201cMust have been a great quarterly harvest.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
    5. \u201cSoon, they\u2019ll sacrifice the quality report.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      A similar set of captions allude to pagan rituals, but not human sacrifices:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. \u201cIf anyone merits pagan ritual worship, it\u2019s Dave from accounting.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
      2. \u201cTake the offer. Every corporate job is a cult.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
      3. \u201cAnd I thought they only worshipped money.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
      4. \u201cHe is Bob, the god of accounts receivable.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
      5. \u201cI used to worship my boss.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Here\u2019s the best pandemic joke: <\/span>\u201cThe return to office has been chaotic.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

        This entry cleverly bemoans the fact that independent festivals lose their appeal when they sell out: <\/span>\u201cCorporations have kinda ruined Burning Man for me.\u201d<\/b> I like the joke but not the adverb \u201ckinda\u201d\u2014it\u2019s too cute\u2014but that didn\u2019t stop Bob from including this caption in his top ten.<\/span><\/p>\n

        I love this entry<\/span>\u2014\u201cI still think accountants are boring.\u201d\u2014<\/b>but I was alone in that assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n

        I would like this entry a lot more without the second sentence: <\/span>\u201cTry doing this over Zoom. Just sayin.\u201d<\/b> Those last two words are<\/span> completely unnecessary and detract from an otherwise fine joke. A caption should always end with the punchline, which is never \u201cjust sayin\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        Here are a few examples of common statements that take on surprising but fitting meanings in the context of the drawing:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. \n
            \n
          1. \u201cAnother meeting that should have been an email.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
          2. \u201cAre you sure this won\u2019t get back to HR?\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
          3. \u201cCorporate\u2019s going paperless.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            The use of gender-neutral terms in the workplace can be important, but it can also go too far, as this entry suggests: <\/span>\u201cThat\u2019s Wicker Person.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

            I like this joke<\/span>\u2014\u201cThey don\u2019t actually light the lawyer on fire for liability reasons.\u201d<\/b>\u2014but it could be punchier. Maybe, \u201cThey\u2019d torch it, but they\u2019re concerned about liability.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

            These entries allude to corporate retreats:<\/span><\/p>\n

              \n
            1. \u201cThey don\u2019t actually burn it. They just fail to catch it in a trust fall activity.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
            2. \u201cThey\u2019re really taking team building seriously this year.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              The following two entries work because the speaker\u2019s oblivious and focusing on something irrelevant:<\/span><\/p>\n

                \n
              1. \u201cThat\u2019s not authentic wicker.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
              2. \u201cWho wears a tie anymore?\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                Before revealing the winning caption, and explaining why all five judges loved it, I\u2019ll highlight two more captions that made Bob laugh:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. \u201cEasy, Leonard. I think we\u2019ve stumbled onto a tribe of auditors.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n
                2. \u201cI should go change for the interview.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  This week\u2019s winner, <\/span>Michael Pollick<\/span>, submitted, <\/span>\u201cAll I got was a cake and a card.\u201d<\/b> Instead of simply reconciling the disparate frames of reference\u2014pagan rituals and corporate culture\u2014Michael\u2019s caption explains why the people in business suits are dancing around the Wicker Man. They\u2019re celebrating a colleague\u2019s birthday or retirement. His caption also explains why the person who\u2019s speaking doesn\u2019t look as alarmed as he would be if he were witnessing an actual pagan ritual or human sacrifice. He\u2019s just surprised, and maybe a little disappointed.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  Well done, Michael. You deserve $1,000.<\/span><\/p>\n
