A plainclothes detective is saying something to a uniformed police officer, who\u2019s dusting a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">huge <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fingerprint on the wall of a room that\u2019s been cordoned off with yellow barrier tape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kenseth\u2019s original caption was: <\/span><b>\u201cI don\u2019t want to put the cart before the horse, but this could be connected with half the building falling down.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Here\u2019s a shorter and superior version of the same joke: <\/span><b>\u201cOur suspect could be a giant.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This entry also has the detective <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stating the obvious: <\/span><b>\u201cThere <\/b><b><i>should<\/i><\/b><b> be witnesses.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next set of captions suggest that he\u2019s oblivious:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cWe have a witness who says the suspect was wearing glasses.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cIf only we had something to go on.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cI wish we had more to go on.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cAnyone get a description?\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cSo where\u2019s the evidence?\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cAny leads?\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But these entries suggest that the uniformed officer is the slow one:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cReally? You\u2019re surprised he wasn\u2019t wearing gloves?\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>\u201cThat <\/b><b><i>really<\/i><\/b><b> won\u2019t be necessary.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of unnecessary, that last caption (which is good) doesn\u2019t need italics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here were the month\u2019s best puns:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cRound up the unusual suspects.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cRun it under the macroscope.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cThe suspect remains at large.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cGreat job. Let\u2019s catch this monster.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That last pun would be so much better without the first two words, which are unnecessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of you did a nice job of reconciling the disparate frames of reference (giants and criminal investigations) by connecting the suspect\u2019s size to some aspect of law enforcement, such as forensic arts: <\/span><b>\u201cI\u2019ll get the sketch muralist.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or kidnappings:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cThat explains the huge ransom note.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or prisons:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to put this one in the big house.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cI think we\u2019re gonna need a bigger cell.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next three captions suggest that the detective is scared to pursue a giant:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cI\u2019ll let you handle the arrest.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cLet\u2019s call it a suicide.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cWhat do ya say we just frame the guy who lives next door and call it a day?\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That last entry is too long. If you changed \u201cWhat do ya say we just\u201d to \u201cLet\u2019s\u201d and substituted \u201cthe neighbor\u201d for \u201cthe guy who lives next door and call it a day\u201d and made the question a suggestion, you\u2019d have a terrific caption: \u201cLet\u2019s frame the neighbor.\u201d Furthermore, as long as I have a part in judging these contests, I will never consent to giving a cash prize to anyone who shortens \u201cyou\u201d to \u201cya.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following entry suggests that the suspect is even larger than the police initially feared: <\/span><b>\u201cIt gets worse. That\u2019s his pinky.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 While discussing this caption during a video conference, Bob Mankoff and Trevor Hoey and I\u2014all grown men with families and jobs\u2014actually checked our hands to confirm that the pinkie is indeed the smallest finger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next we have a horrible caption that nevertheless made us all laugh out loud: <\/span><b>\u201cPut an APB out for Bigthumb O\u2019Toole.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That\u2019s the very definition of \u201cso bad it\u2019s good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t usually care for meta captions, but this one\u2019s alright: <\/span><b>\u201cPeople will suspect us, since our heads look like thumbs.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I would have changed \u201csince\u201d to \u201cas.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next three entries suggest that the cartoon is set in an art gallery:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cPut a frame around it and let\u2019s call it a day.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cWe think it could be a Bansky job.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cIt appears to be impressionism.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any cartoon that features the police will elicit jokes about donuts, and these were the best:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cIf you run out of print dust, use donut powder.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u00a0\u201cSpeaking of powder, we\u2019re out of donuts.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, we have a caption that suggests the detective recently attended sensitivity training: <\/span><b>\u201cWe don\u2019t use the word \u2018giant;\u2019 we say \u2018person of size.\u2019\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s winning caption comes from Thomas Vida: <\/span><b>\u201cOur suspect could be a giant.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The five runners-up, in no particular order, are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cAny leads?\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cI\u2019ll get the sketch muralist\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cIt appears to be impressionism.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cLet\u2019s call it a suicide.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cThat <\/b><b><i>really<\/i><\/b><b> won\u2019t be necessary.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month we have, courtesy of Lars Kenseth, a crime scene.
