Phil:<\/b>\u00a0 Why do you suppose so many cartoons are set in bars?<\/span><\/p>\n

Rex:<\/b>\u00a0 Because bars are the perfect place for drunken confessions, failed pick-up efforts, and public humiliations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Phil:<\/b>\u00a0 All funny premises, let\u2019s look closer at some pick-up scenes\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

PICK-UP LINES<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Rex:<\/b>\u00a0 This well-dressed woman gets right to the point with an iconic celebrity from yesteryear. Check out the details in Leo Cullum\u2019s beautifully drawn upscale bar scene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Phil:<\/b>\u00a0 Incongruity drives this cartoon. The woman appears not at all nonplussed by the presence of a realistically drawn ad icon. She may not find Mr. Goodbar, but she\u2019s got her eye on Mr. Peanut.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BUY THIS CARTOON<\/a><\/p>\n

Phil:<\/b>\u00a0 Speaking of odd-looking guys, here\u2019s a cartoon inspired by the Easter Island heads. There\u2019s much less detail than Leo Cullum would include, but the head definitely evokes mystery. Again, a seemingly everyday person interacts comfortably with an image from an alternate reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rex:<\/b>\u00a0 Right, and Mr. Stonehead doesn\u2019t seem so out of place with his fitted suit and martini. The cartoon also provides a little history lesson; European arrival to the island occurred on Easter Sunday in \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 1722.<\/span><\/p>\n

Phil:<\/b>\u00a0 Our cartoonists can\u2019t resist getting animals into the act. Take J.B. Handelsman\u2019s horoscope-themed cartoon, for example. Unlike the others, no human interacts with the non-human characters. I love how the Capricorn goat tugs flirtatiously at her beard.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rex:<\/b>\u00a0 That fish in the foreground doesn\u2019t look too out of water; he seems to be keeping hydrated. <\/span><\/p>\n

BRUSH-OFFS<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Rex:<\/b>\u00a0 We started off with cartoons about attempted pick-ups. How about some brush-off cartoons?<\/span><\/p>\n

Phil:<\/b>\u00a0 I like this one by Carolita Johnson. Note how the background is suggested rather than spelled out, but it still conveys a bar. The cowgirl boots create a style difference between the two characters.<\/span><\/p>\n

BUY THIS CARTOON<\/a><\/p>\n

Rex:<\/b>\u00a0 Those boots are made for walking\u2014right past old baldy. At least her rejection is tempered by the words \u201cright now\u201d, suggesting that, just maybe, he could try again later.<\/span><\/p>\n

Phil:<\/b>\u00a0 There\u2019s rejection, and then there\u2019s crushing humiliation, as exemplified in this beautifully rendered cartoon by William Haefeli. It\u2019s a closely cropped composition, but all of the elements are there: a few bottles, a largely obscured bartender, and silhouettes and glimpses of customers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rex:<\/b>\u00a0 And the caption is an ego-crusher. Ooh, that\u2019s gotta hurt!<\/span><\/p>\n

Rex:<\/b>\u00a0 And saddest of all is this Michael Crawford cartoon, in which a man tells of lost love.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Phil:<\/b>\u00a0 Wait, this is a late-night caf\u00e9, not a bar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rex:<\/b>\u00a0 At least the caffeinated conversationalists will have plenty to say. <\/span><\/p>\n

ONLINE DATING<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Phil:<\/b>\u00a0 Let\u2019s end on a happy note with this pleasantly weird cartoon by Joe Dator. It reflects the current trend to find a compatible partner online, where much depends on the profile photo. Meeting person-to-person or, in this case, person-to-cat-headed woman, comes later.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rex:<\/b>\u00a0 I think they make a cute couple. I hope it works out.<\/span><\/p>\n
