It\u2019s set in a dingy apartment, where a princess who\u2019s wearing a hennin\u2014a headdress in the shape of a cone\u2014is sitting on a couch next to a fat unicorn who\u2019s smoking. They\u2019re watching TV. The end table next to the unicorn, and the floor around the end table, are strewn with empty beer cans and cigarette butts. The apartment door is secured from the inside with a metal bar, indicating that they live in a rough neighborhood. The unicorn is looking at his phone, and the princess, who\u2019s visibly annoyed, is speaking.<\/span><\/p>\nLe Lievre\u2019s original caption emphasized the princess\u2019s disappointment: <\/span>\u201c\u2018A life of enchantment, wonder and bareback riding,\u2019 you said…\u2019\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\nA few of you went after the same joke:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201c\u2018Ever after\u2019 is so much longer than I ever imagined.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cThe End.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cThe magic is gone.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cThe glitter is gone.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
There\u2019s a connection between unicorns and glitter\u2014I\u2019m not sure where it originated\u2014and a couple of you highlighted it:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cI don\u2019t care how sparkly it is\u2014scoop it up.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cGlitter doesn\u2019t vacuum itself.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Unicorns are also associated with rainbows\u2014the association is apparently a\u00a0 Victorian invention\u2014and that is why unicorns are now a symbol of the LCBT movement. One of you combined a reference to this association with a joke about women who criticize their husbands for doing a bad job of replacing rolls of toilet paper: <\/span>\u201cAnd the rainbow in the bathroom should hang over, not under.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nSeveral of you alluded to the unicorn\u2019s status as a mythical creature:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cI can see why no one believes in you.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI wish you never existed.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI no longer believe in us.<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cYou\u2019re unbelievable.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cThe real myth was your Tinder profile.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
And one of you alluded to another mythical creature: <\/span>\u201cAt least the dragon had fire in his belly.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nUnicorns are the stuff of legends and folk takes, which are essentially fairytales, so a few of you alluded to two other fairytales:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cI didn\u2019t \u2018let him kiss me.\u2019 I was asleep.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cMy evil stepmother was right.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cMy ex was charming.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI wonder if that frog is still single.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cAt least the frog had potential.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
That last caption is especially clever because it acknowledges the frog\u2019s untapped ability to transform into a prince.<\/span><\/p>\nOne of you went a step further by alluding to a nursery rhyme: <\/span>\u201cIf I wanted to live like this, I would have married one of the three little pigs.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThere were many sex jokes, one of which I won\u2019t mention here because it made me flinch, and these were the two best:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cTell Godiva to stop sexting and send chocolates.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cYou destroyed another headboard, Romeo.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
I would like that first caption better if the reference to \u201cGodiva\u201d included her title.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nOne of you noted that most unicorns are notoriously difficult to find and subdue: <\/span>\u201cYou were easier t catch than I expected.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThe following caption suggests that the princess is responding to an accusation that she used false pretenses to entrap the unicorn: <\/span>\u201cYou knew I wasn\u2019t a virgin when we met.\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nBob Mankoff loved this next entry because it came completely out of left field and focused on the similar shapes of the unicorn\u2019s horn and the princess\u2019s hennin: <\/span>\u201cIf you would just wear it, we could go out as ordinary woman and horse with a hat.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nFinally, here are two entries that allude to the television:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cTo get better reception, raise your head.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cWhoever holds the remote should have opposable thumbs.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The only problem with that last caption is it\u2019s not specific to unicorns. It would work with any hoofed animal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nCongratulations to ELIZABETH THORNLEY, who won the contest with, <\/span>\u201cYou were easier to catch than I expected.\u201d<\/i><\/b> The five runners-up were:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cIf you would just wear it, we could go out as an ordinary woman and horse with a hat.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
