Her man looks shocked, as one would, and he\u2019s holding his wine glass and saying something.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nWe all assumed the man is speaking, but Everden said the man\u2019s mouth is open only because he\u2019s surprised, and that his original caption was not a line of dialogue but a banner that read, \u201cIt occurred to Roger that he really doesn\u2019t have thick skin.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSome of you suggested that the woman stabbed the man because he wouldn\u2019t stop talking about himself: <\/span>\u201cBut enough about me.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nOr wasn\u2019t being sufficiently attentive: <\/span>\u201cOkay, now I\u2019m listening.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nOr had dozed off: <\/span>\u201cHow long was I asleep?\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nOr had made an offensive joke: <\/span>\u201cMy friends think I\u2019m funny.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nOr had just ended their relationship: <\/span>\u201cYou were supposed to cry. Most women cry.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThis next entry addresses not only the fact that the man needs medical attention, but that he got stabbed because he refers to women as girls: <\/span>\u201cLuckily, the other girl I\u2019m seeing is a doctor.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThis caption suggests that the woman misheard her date: <\/span>\u201cThe wine. The wine is full-bodied.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nI usually hate mansplaining captions\u2014they\u2019re overdone\u2014but this one is great: <\/span>\u201cYou did that because you were frustrated with my mansplaining.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nHere are the month\u2019s best sex jokes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n- \u201cIt was before we met, and besides, I never thought your sister would tell you.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cForget I even mentioned a threesome.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Mankoff sort of liked <\/span>\u201cMy nuts are down here,\u201d<\/i><\/b> but nuts is a ridiculous word that no one uses. The caption would work much better with \u201ctesticles\u201d or \u201cballs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nThere were a lot of puns this month and I didn\u2019t like any of them, but here are a few that weren\u2019t quite as bad as the others:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cYou make three very strong points.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI get your points.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cPoint taken.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The next three entries transformed an ordinary statement into a fitting caption:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cNot tonight, dear, I have a headache.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cYou really know how to hurt a guy.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cTo my health.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
That last entry is especially clever because the man\u2019s holding his wine glass as if he\u2019s about to deliver a toast.<\/span><\/p>\nThe following caption plays on the double-meaning of the last word while referring to the idiom \u201cstick a fork in it,\u201d which is used to signify that someone is finished or defeated: <\/span>\u201cAm I done?\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThe next set of entries use understatement very effectively, even if they don\u2019t quite match the man\u2019s wide-eyed expression:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cI know you\u2019re angry when you cross your arms.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cThis will make it harder for us to kiss later.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI didn\u2019t realize you were left-handed.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cLet\u2019s go back to passive aggression.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI respond to verbal cues, too.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cIt\u2019s in my forehead, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cThis wasn\u2019t in your profile.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI can tell you\u2019re upset.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cYou\u2019re upset with me.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Here\u2019s a good etiquette joke: <\/span>\u201cThat one\u2019s for salad.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nAnd here\u2019s one of my favorite entries, but the other judges didn\u2019t share my enthusiasm for it: <\/span>\u201cNo, I will not ask the waiter to bring you another fork.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nCongratulations to TODD HUTTUNEN, who won this month\u2019s contest with,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cI know you’re angry when you cross your arms.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
