- You knew my money was fake when you married me.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
That second entry is good, but here\u2019s an even better version: <\/span>\u201cI never said it was real money.\u201d<\/i><\/b> And here\u2019s one that\u2019s just OK: <\/span>\u201cIt hurts when you say I\u2019ve never made any real money.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nHere are the month\u2019s best puns:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n- \u201cYou used to love my monopolizing things.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cHere come the water works.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cThis is my park place.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Here\u2019s the best long caption: <\/span>\u201cWhat happened to the two 500 dollar, two 100 dollar, two 50 dollar, six 20 dollar, five 10 dollar, five 5 dollar, and five 1 dollar bills I just gave you?\u201d<\/i><\/b> (It would be better, however, if the word dollar were replaced with a dollar sign: <\/span>\u201cWhat happened to the two $500, two $100, two $50, six $20, five $10, five $5, and five $1 bills I just gave you?\u201d<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\nAnd here\u2019s the best scatological joke: <\/span>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t Go I just passed.\u201d<\/i><\/b> Bravo yelled \u201cNO!\u201d when he saw that entry, but God help me, I like it. Yes, it\u2019s vulgar and juvenile, but it does a nice job of combining a reference to the game with a comment on men who spend too much time in their La-Z-Boy recliners, and it made me laugh out loud. It still does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nMany of you suggested that the couple are having a heated argument:<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cYou know what it\u2019s like when the bottom falls out.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cGo to hell. Go directly to hell.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cGo directly to hell.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cYou shave yours first.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
I especially like that last entry, even though it is sexist and mean, because it was the only one to allude to Mr. Monopoly\u2019s mustache.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nLike the \u201cwater works\u201d and \u201cgo directly\u201d entries noted above, the next several captions allude to cards that are used in <\/span>Monopoly<\/span><\/i>:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n- \u201cYeah? Well, it\u2019s also been a while since you won second prize in a beauty contest.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI don’t think you understand what a compliment ‘second prize’ is.”<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cSecond place is in a beauty contest isn\u2019t much to brag about.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cThere is no \u2018Take Out the Trash\u2019 card.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cI\u2019m using my \u2018Get Out of Housework Free\u2019 card.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cAdvance to Kitchen. Collect Snack and Beverage.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
- \u201cCan you advance to the kitchen and collect me a beer?\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
And this entry alludes to one of the game pieces: <\/span>\u201cI suggest you get a hotel.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThis caption cleverly suggests that both <\/span>Monopoly<\/span><\/i> and some bad marriages seem endless: <\/span>\u201cThis has gone on far too long and isn\u2019t fun anymore.\u201d<\/i><\/b> This caption makes the same point about the game but doesn\u2019t tie it to bad relationships: <\/span>\u201cThe game will be over in 11 hours.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nI like this caption, but it buries the punchline: <\/span>\u201cWhen I was in jail, you never visited me once.\u201d<\/i><\/b> A better version would be, <\/span>\u201cYou never visited me in jail.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\nHere\u2019s a nice reference to the way players win the right to purchase properties in <\/span>Monopoly<\/span><\/i>: <\/span>\u201cI landed on it first.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nAnd this refers to the way they move around the board: <\/span>\u201cYou\u2019re blocking the TV, go back 3 spaces.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nThis caption incorporates a reference to the domestic scene in Bravo\u2019s drawing: <\/span>\u201cDid you launder my money?\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nAnd finally, we have a reference to just how boring watching TV can be: <\/span>\u201cI\u2019m also into monotony.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nCongratulations to frequent finalist MARK STROUT, who submitted the winning caption: <\/span>\u201cI landed on it first.\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe five runners-up are:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n- \u201cI don’t think you understand what a compliment ‘second prize’ is.”<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n
