“I Hope This Finds You Well”

March 24, 2020 by Bob Mankoff

I had stopped using that bit of boilerplate in emails a while ago because it felt meaningless. Now it’s too loaded with meaning to use without quotation marks.

But I do hope this finds you well even if you are, like so many of us, among the worried well.

I’m in that group, but pretty much always have been. That’s reflected in the following New Yorker cartoons of mine in which, just coincidentally, the patient’s name is my own.

That last one I did back in 1988 when I was in my forties. But now I’ve got a case of the seventies which is a whole different deal—especially now.

So, Sunday evening, New York time—as per the Governor’s orders—I was “codgering” in place with my wife, our two rescue dogs, Alfie and Todo:

and the two cats, Tommy and Lou Lou:

who—government order or not—will want to go out … then in … then out…

I might just step outside myself for a breath of fresh air and go rob a liquor store—I’d have the perfect alibi. [Sorry about that. Dark times need some dark humor. You can’t cope completely with cutesy cat jokes.]

We at CartoonStock and CartoonStock care about a world plunging into despair. Cartoons are not a panacea for that. If they were, big pharma would have bought our company and be charging exorbitant prices for them.

Yours still in Good Humor,
Bob
