James Thurber Cartoons: EXCLUSIVELY on CartoonStock.com

March 10, 2020 by CartoonStock

Licensing for New Yorker cartoonist James Thurber is now exclusively available on CartoonStock!

Thurber lore has it that while writing his many essays and short stories for the New Yorker, James Thurber would doodle on any scrap of paper at hand and that he was frequently asked to submit drawings but refused stating that he was not an artist. However, according to two of Thurber’s foremost biographers, this is inaccurate. At one time, in 1929, E.B. White did dig a single drawing out from the wastebasket and submitted it on Thurber’s behalf (a Seal on a rock looking at two specks in the distance, and saying, “Hm, explorers.”), but it was rejected.

After Thurber & White’s Is Sex Necessary was published in November of 1929 and became a hit, Thurber was asked to resubmit his “Hm, explorers” drawing. According to Thurber biographer Burton Bernstein, “Thurber didn’t get around to that task until December of 1931.” By then the seal on the rock had morphed into Thurber’s classic seal in the bedroom cartoon (seen below). It wasn’t printed in the magazine until Jan. 30, 1932. Thurber’s first cartoon was published a year prior in 1931.

Thurber went on to write nearly forty more books — including essay collections, short stories, fables, and children’s stories; he also wrote three plays and served as illustrator for three books.

Below are a handful of our favorite James Thurber cartoons. You can see the full collection here. On CartoonStock.com you can license Gahan Wilson cartoons for use in presentations, publications, web, and classroom use, or buy prints and products featuring his cartoons.
