Licensing for New Yorker cartoonist James Thurber is now exclusively available on CartoonStock!
Thurber lore has it that while writing his many essays and short stories for the New Yorker, James Thurber would doodle on any scrap of paper at hand and that he was frequently asked to submit drawings but refused stating that he was not an artist. However, according to two of Thurber’s foremost biographers, this is inaccurate. At one time, in 1929, E.B. White did dig a single drawing out from the wastebasket and submitted it on Thurber’s behalf (a Seal on a rock looking at two specks in the distance, and saying, “Hm, explorers.”), but it was rejected.
Thurber went on to write nearly forty more books — including essay collections, short stories, fables, and children’s stories; he also wrote three plays and served as illustrator for three books.
